We walked along the beach at sunrise, climbed the stair historic lighthouse , mountain biked on the trails lined with prehistoric looking foliage, and sea kayaked through the sloughs.

A permit is required for all camping. Primitive camping is available on Cedar and Murphy Islands beaches year round which requires no prior arrangement. All arrangements for camping should be made with the supervisor of the Santee Coastal Reserve.

The road in is Paved. Elmwood Recreation Area is open Year Round. You may stay 14 Days at Elmwood Recreation Area. This recreation area is located in the northeastern portion of the Francis Marion National Forest.

Honey Hill Campground is open Year Round. You may stay 14 Days at Honey Hill Campground. There are free South Carolina boondocking sites at this location and the maximum RV length is 45 feet.

Friendly host. Camping is free. Several campsites with room for trailers. Campsites are pretty well furnished with a table and benches. Has pit toilets. The road in is Dirt. You may stay 14 nights at Halfway Creek Trail Camp. Ideal place to pop a tent while thru hiking.

Just a small dirt loop with room for a few vehicles. No facilities elect or water, boondocking only. There are no restrictions that I know of for use of this area, it is State owned no signs, no patrol, or anyone to bother boondockers. No drinkable water here so bring in your own. Area sometimes can be busy from cars and boats and occasional loud parties from houses across the lake.

The road in is Gravel. Forest Service website says there's currently no drinking or running water of any kind at the campground so that may pose an issue if you don't bring your own. The park offers vault toilets, fire rings, showers when the water is working and garbage cans. This is a seasonal campground that's open from May 1 through Nov.

Seeing the damage done to this island by hurricanes Mathew and Irma, reminded us of the power of Mother Nature and the real price of global warming. Many of the state parks along this coastline experienced millions of dollars in damage, so supporting them during their recovery is truly important.
