Office of Institutional Equity, Inclusion, and Engagement | USC Upstate – Equity and Inclusion Summit

USC faculty and students began earnestly discussing a project to create guidelines around pronouns in the classroom a couple of years ago. USC does not have an official pronoun policy, which leaves professors and students to make up their own guidelines.

Julian Williams, the VP of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, is drafting a pronoun policy with his office that sets expectations for the USC community but will not mandate that faculty and staff members must use a student's preferred name and pronouns. Williams is working with the registrar, HR and IT to set up systems within Microsoft Office , Banner and CarolinaCard so faculty, students and staff can add their preferred names and pronouns to each program.

From my perspective, I think most of our faculty and staff members will do so. Atticus Wolfe, an instructor in the sociology department and doctoral student, hasn't faced discrimination at USC for encouraging the use of pronouns. However, he knows other graduate and undergraduate students who have been victims of discrimination. As an instructor, Wolfe interacts with preferred pronouns among students and professors. He often encourages students to mirror him when he includes his pronouns in his introductions.

Most interactions with instructors are positive, but Wolfe has recognized some discomfort when encouraging other instructors to use pronouns. So it's very much going to depend on how much do you feel it's comfortable to take actions and matters into your own hands, because the vast majority of professors do not share their pronouns. The Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is also launching a website for the guidelines and will set expectations for community members for pronoun usage and how the DEI office will implement these guidelines.

She said she believed students are generally good at respecting others' pronouns. However, most professors didn't use pronouns in her classes and never asked for students.

So that was definitely kind of disappointing. As of now, students, faculty and staff can include their pronouns in my. On Sept. This change is part of the university's ongoing efforts to promote a more inclusive campus environment.

Modicamore believes using pronouns in a classroom setting should be mandated, describing it as a "common courtesy. Meanwhile, Wolfe acknowledges USC's inclusivity progress but doesn't believe USC has followed through with the protection of marginalized communities. He believes USC has done a worse job when stacked up against other public universities. However, approximately colleges enable students to indicate preferred pronouns on course rosters.

In South Carolina, Clemson University is the only public college that allows students to indicate preferred pronouns.

Williams wants faculty, students and staff to know his office is actively working on implementing options to choose pronouns in university databases. Advertise Contact Housing. Williams does not have a set time period for when the policy will be officially implemented. More Like This. What You Should Know About Gastroesophageal Reflux (GER) in Infants and Children | AAFP.

Many people find they experience an episode of gastroesophageal reflux after eating a heavy meal, or particularly spicy food. For most adults, treating gastroesophageal reflux is simple, as occasional heartburn and acid reflux symptoms can be relieved easily with antacids. In some cases, episodes of heartburn may become more frequent, resulting in gastroesophageal reflux disorder, also called GERD.

This disease, characterized by two or more episodes of heartburn or acid reflux in a week, can cause chronic inflammation and irritation of the esophagus that can increase the risk of cancer. Dietary changes, weight loss, exercise, and other lifestyle modifications are often recommended for treatment of adults with GERD. Gastroesophageal reflux disease GERD is a more severe and long-lasting condition in which GER causes repeated symptoms that are bothersome or leads to complications.

Any infant can have GERD. GERD is more common in premature infants. Infants with certain health conditions that affect the esophagus, nervous system, or lungs are also more likely to have GERD. Infants with GERD may develop complications such as esophagitis, poor weight gain, and complications outside the esophagus. However, some of these complications may be signs of other, unrelated conditions that affect infants.

Doctors may check for health problems other than GERD that could be causing these complications. Esophagitis is inflammation in the esophagus. Gastroesophageal reflux GER is also called acid reflux, acid indigestion, or heartburn. It occurs when acid from your stomach backs up into your esophagus. This causes a burning and tightening sensation in your chest and upper stomach area. During normal swallowing, your esophagus muscle contracts to push food down into your stomach.

Then, your esophagus muscle opens a valve called your lower esophageal sphincter LES. This muscle appears at the entrance to your stomach and allows food to pass through. Once the food arrives in your stomach, your LES closes to prevent your digestive acids and other stomach contents from rising back up into your esophagus. This allows stomach acid to creep back up into your esophagus. It can result in irritation and burning in the lining of your esophagus.

This is why babies typically spit up and burp after eating. However, GER can become serious if it lasts beyond the one-year mark.

This can indicate that your baby has GERD. GER or heartburn is also fairly common in adults. These include fatty foods, spicy foods, and acidic fruits and juices. Gastroesophageal reflux disease GERD is an official disease diagnosed by your doctor. Its main symptoms of heartburn and acid reflux are similar to GER. As a result, certain triggers, such as eating a big meal or consuming acidic beverages, overpower your LES.

Esophagitis may cause ulcers and bleeding in the lining of the esophagus. An esophageal stricture happens when your esophagus becomes too narrow. Esophageal strictures can lead to problems with swallowing. Some people with GERD develop complications outside the esophagus, in the mouth, throat, or lungs.
