Cities in tennessee close to north carolina. Cities Nearby Knoxville, Tennessee, United States

It's no secret that Tennessee is one of the Southeast's best places to live or retire. Many individuals are drawn to the state thanks in part to a low cost of living, mild climate, and high quality of life. And, with everything from lively cities to slow-paced rural areas, Tennessee easily lends itself to diverse lifestyles.

The state's topography is also unique, ranging from the 6,foot Clingmans Dome at its eastern border, to the soft rolling hills and flat farmlands in its mid-section, to sea level along the Mississippi River. In fact, the three regions are so distinct they were constitutionally mandated in the early s as three "Grand Divisions," simply named East Tennessee, Middle Tennessee and West Tennessee, and each gets a star on the state flag.

As the state grew, people began to recognize physical differences within each Grand Division, so six physical regions were labeled. Today, people continue to be drawn to the state's unique geographic regions as well as the plentiful offering of attractions such as parks, entertainment, arts, culture, and more. You've probably also heard of Clingmans Dome, the state's highest point.

The Unakas – with rugged terrain, rushing streams and heavily forested slopes – form a natural border with North Carolina. Near this border is where you'll find the quaint town of Gatlinburg , as well as some of the state's most popular golf and retirement communities. Its ridges and hills, such as Bays Mountain and Clinch Mountain, rise among its fertile valleys where numerous tributaries join to form the Tennessee River.

Here, you'll find two of the state's urban areas – Knoxville , the state's third largest city, and Chattanooga , the fourth largest, as well as the surrounding lakefront property that appeals to retirees. Knoxville lake properties are plentiful since Knoxville is not only bordered by Lake Loudon but it is also close to five other lakes. Popular Norris Lake is about halfway between Knoxville and Chattanooga. To the west of the Tennessee Valley is a portion of the Cumberland Plateau, with flat-topped mountains and sharp valleys, and elevations ranging from 1, feet to more than 2, feet.

This is where you'll find Tennessee's portion of Lookout Mountain, which overlooks Chattanooga. Although a fairly economical family getaway destination, real estate here is relatively upscale compared to other areas of the state. The next Grand Division is in the Middle Tennessee region, which includes the physical regions of Highland Rim and Central Basin sometimes called the Nashville Basin , as well as the western portion of the Cumberland Plateau.

The Highland Rim surrounds the Central Basin and is somewhat higher, resulting in summer temperatures about 10 degrees cooler than the surrounding area. Although sandwiched between East and West Tennessee, the state's mid-section has rich, fertile farm country and diverse wildlife due to its three large rivers.

Waterfront real estate can be found along the Cumberland and Tennessee Rivers, which flow into the Ohio River, and along Duck River, which eventually merges with the Tennessee River. This fortuitous location helped the Nashville community develop into a major trade center in the 20th century, most notably for tobacco and flour milling, before it became known as "Music City" and home to The Grand Ole Opry.

And, ecologically speaking, some of the last remaining large American Chestnut trees grow in Middle Tennessee and are being used to help grow blight-resistant trees. On the west, the area used to be bordered by the Mississippi River, but its shifting route created some concerns, so the western border was redrawn through what's called the Mississippi River Alluvial Plain, or Mississippi "embayment.

Like the two other Grand Divisions, Western Tennessee also has a physical region or, depending on who you ask, more than one. Everyone agrees West Tennessee includes the Gulf Coastal Plain, but some geologists insist there are two other distinct regions: the Alluvian Plain, a mile-wide stretch of hilly land that runs along the western bank of the Tennessee River, and the Western Valley of the Tennessee Valley.

The Gulf Coastal Plain is actually a large geographic land area that reaches from the Gulf of Mexico to southern Illinois. Although Tennessee offers diverse entertainment options, the state is most widely known for its musical roots. Since , Memphis has been where the seed of much modern music was planted. In fact, Beale Street in Memphis is considered to be the birthplace of the blues – it's where blues legend W.

Handy performed at the dawn of the 20th century and it's the home of blues guitar legend B. The roots of rock 'n' roll are also found in Memphis. In the northeast corner of Tennessee is the city of Bristol, where Victor recording sessions marked the birth of country music. Tennessee's 42, square miles include 54 state parks as well as 14 areas managed by the National Park Service. The most recognized is the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the nation's most visited national park.

The park straddles the border between North Carolina and Tennessee, and it is world renowned for its diversity of plant and animal life, the beauty of its ancient mountains, and the quality of its remnants of Southern Appalachian mountain culture.

The forests of the adjacent Cherokee National Forest are also a huge draw, where fishing, water skiing and boating are popular. In the same vicinity, Gatlinburg also offers a plethora of parks and recreation opportunities.

In Middle Tennessee is a national park the likes of which not many believe – the Bicentennial Mall State Park, an urban state park in the shadow of the State Capitol in downtown Nashville. Opened in , its mix of concrete and crocuses and myriad other flowers and plants serves as a lasting monument to Tennessee's Bicentennial celebration.

Knoxville and Nashville feature many lakes offering every form of outdoor recreation. Combined, they feature miles of shoreline and more than 25, acres of water surface. Along and near the shoreline are more than 50 miles of islands, numerous picnic areas, caves, cliffs and beaches. Percy Priest Lake, 10 miles east of Nashville, offers 14, acres and miles of shoreline, as well as a number of hiking and mountain bike trails. With more than 22, acres of water and miles of shoreline, it offers lakefront property with some of the finest fishing, boating, skiing and other activities that the state has to offer.

It is a reminder of the government-ordered forcible removal of tens of thousands of Cherokee people from their homelands in Georgia, Alabama, and Tennessee. Oh, and we wouldn't want to "keep you in the dark" about another natural attraction. Tennessee is home to the most caves in the United States, with more than 8, caves registered to date. One of the major pluses Tennessee offers is the low cost of living, which is an average of 20 points below the national average.

No state income tax and comparatively low insurance rates are also major reasons why Tennessee could be a wise choice for individuals looking to retire or relocate. Great music, neat people, the clothes are awesome and fun,rad atmosphere like an old basement youd hang out at in highschool Great time.

Good price for the show and for those who don't want alcohol but still thirsty the have mocktails. My husband and I renewed our vows here and it was such a great experience! It was the full package; renewing, shopping, sipping, laughing, crying- all the things.

Sweet Cheetah She brought us to a rack of vintage clothing to choose our wedding attire. She made us feel really comfortable during the ceremony. Despite it being a fun vibe, it was all taken very serious. After our cutie ceremony, we did a photoshoot inside and outside. We paraded around the bar getting attention. More guava mimosas, antique shopping, and hung in our normal clothes at the bar after it all.

Try it on Wanderlog. Live music venue. This popular, unpretentious concert hall in the River Arts District hosts local and touring live acts showcasing an eclectic array of musical genres from bluegrass and jazz to rockabilly and folk. Desserts are also bite-sized and exude some culinary whimsy, as exemplified with Button's fun root beer float interpretation.

Another speakeasy style bar is Nightbell, which is the creation of James Beard nominated chef Katie Button. In an inconspicuous location behind a gate in a warehouse set back from Lexington Ave, it looks like an antique shop from the street, making it purposefully difficult to find.

While sipping and snacking Brewery offering free tours of its facilities plus a low-key taproom to sample a pint or flight. Asheville's oldest brewery has come a long way since it lived in the basement of Barley's Taprooom and Pizzeria.

Now Highland occupies a sprawling complex in East Asheville, complete with indoor and outdoor concert venues and a rotating cast of food trucks. There's also a gorgeous rooftop spot with a beer bar set in a recycled shipping container and a surrounding patio with plenty of picnic table seating with views of the mountains, so you can sip your local beer while drinking in the pretty, pretty scenery.

What a great time!! We had such a good time in the taproom and had some tasty brews in a great atmosphere. The staff is attentive and obviously love their jobs. Pretty sure this is a part of heaven. Great original asheville craft brewery. Unique taproom with lots of great beer choices. Excellent outdoor spot called "the meadow" on the side of the facility with outdoor seating, a stage, disc golf, volleyball, and more taps.

Enjoy this awesome brewery, very spacious inside with great decorations all around. They even put shipping containers inside and converted them into "office" space, and the bar is quite impressive. Say that and question your existence, did you really just say outloud 7 words of beer goodness? Or was it 6? I don't know, just ask for it and sit down and enjoy your life floating away in irrelevance as it matters no more while you're here.

Mentioned on 2 lists. A two-storied restaurant and brewery, Wicked Weed Brewing is one of the newest craft breweries on the local beer scene but a huge selection of delicious brews has quickly catapulted it onto the list of area favorites. From barrel-aged ales to hoppy American lagers, this brewpub cranks out a varied selection of craft beers designed to pair well with its menu of local-sourced fare. Its close proximity to The Orange Peel next door makes it a great pre- and post-show spot plus the expansive outdoor patio with its blazing fire pit at the center makes it a popular evening haunt.

The fun and casual vibe means the place will likely be packed at peak times. My husband and I went brewery hopping and Wicked Weed was on our list. The service at the bar was exceptional. The bartenders were very attentive and answered our questions about the menu.

We got two flights which are set. The set flights are highly encouraged and were very interesting. They each offered a variety of beers with very distinct tastes. Family and I came for dinner after visiting the Arboretum and this place was a hit!!! Outdoor seating was a plus, service was quick, and food was delicious. Special mention on the beer! I shared a mixed flight with my sister and loved each one. I ordered the Carolina Bison Burger medium well with bacon.

Really enjoyed this brewery and all the beers it offers. Loved trying all the interesting flavors like the Milk and Cookies stout, the brute ale-wine and the Kesho honey ale.

We also had a burger and a chicken sandwich that were really good. The place was packed on a Friday night. Not sure if you can book a reservation for a table, but I would recommend one if you visiting on a busy night. More than a restaurant, more than a movie theater, Asheville Pizza and Brewing Company also called the Brew 'n' View is a popular spot to Really good pizza and fantastic tater tots.

Beer selection was good and the Shiva ipa went great with the burger. Decent beer. Wide selection with lots of options. Would have liked to have sampled more, but they don't do flights. I waited in line for 20 minutes to buy a six pack of beer to go. Bartenders were in no hurry to do anything. I left. I love coming here and supporting our local brewery but I am so disappointed. I worked in restaurants for a long time… does no one have a sense of urgency anymore? You can look out around the city for some great views of the sunset over the Blue Ridge Mountains. The tapas are decent and the cocktails look tiny, but they're not.

Don't let the small glass deceive you. It's still 6oz. The server was around and attentive. She didn't introduce herself and wasn't very informative when I told her I'd never been here. The presentation of the food is spot on though.
