What public schools are closed today – what public schools are closed today: –

The Sarasota County school district says all public schools are closed until further notice due to Hurricane Ian. Superintendent, we are at Venice High School, which is serving as an emergency shelter.

Could you please give us an update on the status of the reopening of Sarasota County schools? We are continuing to assess the damage at all of our schools. We've had 14 shelters open originally; we have a pretty good idea of the damage in those. But we have 35 other schools that were not inhabited during the storm that we're trying to get to to assess the damage.

We've had power outages; the water hasn't worked, roof damage, water intrusion. Since there hasn't been power, I tocay: some of the mold what public schools are closed today – what public schools are closed today: started to build which causes a problem because then your repairs become lengthy if you have to start ripping out carpets and what public schools are closed today – what public schools are closed today:. So, getting the power and the air conditioning on as soon as possible is critical.

And what some people might not realize is that school personnel are working at the shelters right now. We have worked collaboratively with the county and the EOC Emergency Operations Center with our shelters, and one thing I want everybody to understand is when we do open our shelters, our administrators across our entire district, work those shelters, preparing them and working during them.

They've been in those shelters since Tuesday, and they are there to serve. Craig Maniglia, unlike the Coronavirus pandemic, here with the impacts of the hurricane, remote learning isn't even an как сообщается здесь. Virtual learning will become quite difficult for the county because there are families, there are teachers, there are places in our community that no longer have any kind of power.

Heck, there are some people who don't even have a home anymore. So, when you talk about virtual learning that has become a problem because we as a district wat even have stable WiFi right now. So possibly down the line, we could look at some sort of tofay: learning but at this point, we're just trying to get power back on so we can assess damages that we have to do in-person learning. Superintendent, a lot of people, especially in South Sarasota County, are dealing with their own на этой странице crises right now.

We have many employees that have had disasters happen at their own house. And so, they are really working on their own lives at this point in time, so whether we did anything remote, or even had them come in, many wouldn't be able to even come in at this point in time.

Some of them can't even get in and out of toeay: home and they don't have power what public schools are closed today – what public schools are closed today: so forth.

But at the same time, I want to make sure everybody understands that our senior cabinet has been talking about and looking at different options that we can place on the table and it might be even a hybrid of options. But it's all very situational, because it depends on our people because education is a people business. You wuat to have people in front of students or remotely.

So right now, until we really can assess the total damage, it's hard for us to figure out which option to go with. But pretty much anything's on the table right now.

But we will be closed until further notice, until we can figure all that out. Search Query Show Search. Health News Florida. Special Coverage. About Us. WUSF Network. Show Search Search Query. Play Live Radio. Next Up:.

Mama bears are very protective. The average weight of a black bear is pounds. Despite their size, black bears are very agile tree climbers.

During times of danger or threat, bear cubs will take shelter in trees. Bears are opportunists by nature. In the wild, they will feed on whatever is readily available.

Food odors and improperly stored garbage often attract bears to campgrounds and picnic sites. Although they are naturally afraid of humans, the animals lose this fear as they begin to associate human scents with the reward of food. Protect yourself and protect the black bears by storing trash and food in safe locations. For instance, each backcountry campsite and shelter in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park has a cable and pulley system which allows backpackers to easily hoist their food and packs out of the reach of black bears, providing a safer environment for hikers and animals alike.

Based in the city of Asheville, they examine black bear movements via GPS collars to study activity patterns and food behavior. We spotted the above collared bear eating berries high in a tree on Town Mountain.

If camping in national forest or parks, check with the ranger's office for any bear advisories. All food and food-related items should be stored at campsites in a hard-sided bear-resistant canister, or in the trunk of a vehicle, except when preparing and consuming food. Bear canisters are required in some areas in Pisgah National Forest. Do not leave food or garbage inside fire rings, grills at campsite or cabin.

Wipe tabletops clean. Keep scented items in bear-proof canisters, inside trailers, and in the trunk of a vehicle. Items that are not considered bear proof include ice chests, coolers, boxes, cans, tents, soft-sided campers and passenger areas of vehicles. Never leave food or coolers unattended, even in developed picnic areas. Make noise to avoid surprising a bear. Never approach a bear or other wild animal. Mama bears are very protective of her cubs.

Do not hike in the dark. Do not climb a tree. Black bears can climb trees and will do so in pursuit once they consider you a threat. Leave the area or take a detour if a bear comes into view. If this is impossible, wait until the bear moves away. Be especially cautious if you see a female with cubs; never place yourself between a mother and her cub, and never attempt to approach them. The chances of an attack escalate greatly if the Mama bear perceives you as a danger to her cubs.

Most bears are only interested in protecting food, cubs or their space. Never try to block an escape route for them and do not attempt to fight a black bear unless it has attacked you.

But if you are attacked by a black bear, try to escape to a secure place such as a car or building. This kind of bear attack is very rare, but can be serious because it often means the bear is looking for food and considers you and any other humans with you as prey. Never allow a bear access to your food or attempt to feed them. Doing so will only encourage the bear to come closer to you and others who may be with you.

There is a bear pepper spray available that can be purchased at stores that sell guns, camping supplies and related items or ordered online.

It can be an important thing to carry when exploring the back country. It is used defensively to stop an aggressive or attacking bear. Make sure you select an EPA approved product that is specifically designed to stop bears. It is not a repellent so do not apply to your body or equipment. Check with a park ranger or wildlife officer to find out if bear pepper spray is recommended or allowed for the activities you have planned. Forest and wildlife authorities recommend avoiding camping and hiking alone in back country regions—especially in the dark as bears often ramble around then.

And help protect others by reporting all bear incidents to wildlife or related authorities as soon as possible. And whether, at your home, or camping, secure food, garbage and recycling. And do not leave food or garbage inside fire rings at grills at campsites or near cabins. Wipe tabletops clean and never store food and other scented items in a tent, including toothpaste, deodorant and beverages.

The smells on, and of, such items attracts bears. Put trash inside cans stored in a garage, shed or other secure area; or use garbage outside cans or trash containers with a secure latching system or that are bear-resistant.

Remove bird feeders when bears are active. Birdseed and other grains have high calorie content making them appealing to bears. Also, never leave pet food outdoors. Feed outdoor pets portion sizes that will be completely eaten during each meal and remove leftover food and food bowls. Besides removing food attractants, residents can install electric fencing, which will protect bee hives, dumpsters, gardens, compost piles and other potential food sources for bears. Black bears are thriving in eastern North Carolina, 20, strong in the state. Over the past 30 years, black bear populations in North Carolina have increased tenfold. Больше информации, the population is estimated to be 20, Not only are bears growing in density, a recent article by the Virginian Pilot of Norfolk Virginia put forth the idea that black bears in North Carolina are источник bigger thanks to abundant food that allows them to skip hibernating.

That data shows overall the bear weight in coastal North Carolina have remained stable. Olfenbuttle says wildlife officials have identified a few larger bears being harvested in the eastern part of the state. Those could be reasons why these particular bears are larger. And maybe it is reflecting, at least in that area reflecting some bears getting larger. There is data to show that black bears grow bigger in eastern North Carolina, compared to bears from the mountains which can grow to be about lbs.

The current world record black bear, from Craven County was bagged in and weighed lbs. This year, a man from How many bears in north carolina County harvested the second largest black bear in North Carolina records, weighing in at lbs.

Wildlife Resources Commission Wildlife Biologist Mike Carraway says agricultural lands provide a reliable and plentiful source of food, allowing bears in eastern North Carolina to grow larger.

He says another reason why bears are bigger in eastern North Carolina is because we have a longer growing season. Since bears have more to eat and more time to graze and forage, wildlife officials are noting the effect on hibernation, with fewer bears hunkering down for the winter.

Carroway says black bear reproduction patterns are also evolving. Not only does access to an abundance of food means bigger bears, it means more offspring. So I know here in the how many bears in north carolina, we have seen quite a bit of evidence that females that have had three, and four and even five cubs.

Back how many bears in north carolinathe state created 28 bear sanctuaries, encompassing nearlyacres in North Carolina, most of them in eastern North Carolina. Black bear biologist Colleen Olfenbuttel says the current population increase stems from a planned effort on the part of Wildlife Resource Commission three decades ago.

These areas are off-limits to hunting. Most sanctuaries are located on federally or state protected areas with habitat management objectives, ensuring how many bears in north carolina beneficial environment for black bears. Now that their numbers have returned to a healthy level, the Wildlife Resources Commission is hoping to sustain that growth.

In most cases, that means loosening how many bears in north carolina on bear hunting, which is considered to be the best way to control their populations. New regulations went into effect during the first week of bear hunting season, November 10th to the 15 th that allowed hunters to bait bear. Wildlife Officer Sergeant William Cane says hunters could use only non-processed foods, like peaches, apples, and meat scraps.

The second week of bear season starts Monday and will run through Christmas Day. Bear baiting during this time is not permitted. The new law also prohibits baiting bear in sanctuaries.

Because prior to this year, unless you were coming from out of state, you had to buy a special license to hunt bear. This year, everyone is going to have to buy the e-stamp and that just gives us an actual number of people that are bear hunting. A safer way to see the black bears in their natural environment is during an eastern North Carolina bear watching tour.

They eat meat and grasses or other rough vegetation only when their favorite foods are not available. In the farming country of northeast North Carolina, black bears have adapted their tastes to corn, soybeans and peanuts. Most farmers have learned to live with the bears in spite of their foraging in their fields. Hunting helps control the numbers of bears damaging crops. Gail Harrison Hodges' family has farmed in Washington County since the s.

In the beginning, her father had only a few acres of corn, and a bear family in his corn was a real financial blow. In those early days, traps controlled bears that damaged crops. In those days, Gail says, "When my Dad trapped or shot a bear, we ate it, as we did anything Daddy hunted or killed. Gail says her brother who now farms the family land feels more protective of the bears, understanding that humans have encroached into what was once the bears' territory.

Jess Spruill, who also farms in Washington County, says bears can have a financial impact on both corn and soybeans in his operation. Bears will eat the corn ears when they reach full maturity and graze on newly emerged soybeans. Jess watches for the bears and tries to run them out of the soybeans.

Once the beans mature, the bears do not seem as attracted to them. Bears are harder to spot in the tall corn. Jess says it is very common to lose up to 40 yards from the woods of any harvestable crop. The bears are very interested in the plastic-wrapped modules. Some say they like the glue in the wrap. Whatever the case, during their inspection of the bales their claws pop holes in the plastic and the compression of the lint inside causes an explosion, leaving a busted bale and cotton all over the ground.

Bears typically roam from daybreak until dusk. Their territory ranges from one to two miles for young bears and up to eight to 15 miles for adult males. Females range two to six miles. There are records of bears traveling up to miles. If not killed, black bears can live up to 33 years.

According to "Bear Facts," published by the North American Bear Center, very few black bears outside of those in national parks die of natural causes. Most are shot or hit by motor vehicles. The average age of bears killed by hunters is 3 to 5 years old. Young bears sometimes die of starvation and accidental causes; seldom do bears die of disease. Black bears are rather quiet animals, but do have a range of sounds.

They grunt as they look for food. They make a low blowing sound and clack their teeth when afraid. Apr 29, — Updated p. The oldest male documented was Bears in eastern North Carolina enter dens as early as November and as late as January.

Weather and food availability can affect timing of den entrance and den emergence. Females with cubs emerge from their dens last in spring. An average of two to three blind and hairless cubs, weighing less than 1 pound, are born in winter dens. Of these, human-induced mortality is the greatest source of black bear mortality in North Carolina. However in , the North Carolina General Assembly enacted new legislation that allows dogs to be released in the vicinity of any unprocessed food product.

The use of dogs to "strike" and "tree" bears has been a technique that goes back centuries. Biologists believe that about 1, bears live in and around Great Smoky National Park.
