The Fourth of July is next week and you know what that means—fireworks! Although it is customary to celebrate the independence of our nation with a pyrotechnic display, we at LaMarche Safranko Law want to remind everyone of the fireworks law in New York state governing sale and use.

Over the past few weeks, you have no doubt seen the plethora of tents set up in retail parking lots selling fireworks, or sales displays inside local stores. This is because since New York state has legalized the sale and use of certain fireworks—known as sparkling devices—for those 18 or older in more than three dozen counties, including Albany, Saratoga, Schenectady, and Rensselaer.

To be sure you are purchasing legal fireworks from an authorized vendor in New York state, check out the Registered Sparkling Device Vendors list. The adoption of the law by localities across the state has not been without controversy.

Because of confusion about the complexities of what is allowed and what is not, some people misinterpret the regulations and assume any type of firework is allowed. This has raised concerns in at least one local community, which has been dealing with an increased use of the more dangerous types of devices and an increase in fireworks-related emergency calls for law enforcement.

The mating season for American Alligators …. If you happen to encounter an alligator outdoors, here are some things you should know to …. Alligators are indigenous to the southern states including South Carolina, Georgia, Florida and even into Virginia. They are quite common in the Charleston area hanging-out in rivers, marshes, ponds, canals and even in golf course lakes.

Florida , which has the most human-alligator interactions, has recorded 24 deadly alligator attacks since — but 14 of those have occurred in the last 20 years, according to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission data. Department of Natural Resources, there have been 23 non-fatal encounters between people and alligators in the Palmetto State since as well as three alligator-related fatalities on the record.

All three fatalities happened in the past four years and each occurred in the Lowcountry. Since alligators spend most of their time sunbathing on the shores, there are often telltale signs of their presence. Some of these markings might include large indentations or gouges in the ground and sliding marks where they reentered the water.

However, alligator attacks are fairly rare—and they eat people even less commonly. Only a small fraction of attacks are deadly, and often the remains are found intact after an attack. There are many things you may encounter when swimming in the ocean. While alligators can tolerate salt water for a few hours or even days, they are primarily freshwater animals, living in swampy areas, rivers, streams, lakes, and ponds.

Caimans are not from the United States. There could be the possibility someone may have put a caiman in the lake, but not very likely. The large reptile was caught in the surf and may actually have made his way up the southeastern coast — from Florida — by swimming, plain and simple. For the most part, the Upstate is spared from South Carolina reptile nuisances.

The line is drawn south of the Lakelands, between the border of Aiken and Edgefield counties, and continues south of Saluda, Newberry, Fairfield and Lancaster counties. Still, alligators pop up in the Upstate every once in a while. The American alligator is the only crocodilian native to South Carolina. The range of this reptile includes the Coastal Plain of the Gulf and Atlantic states, ranging as far north as Albemarle Sound in North Carolina, and westward to southern Texas.

This is a large animal that can reach lengths of 5 m 16 ft. American alligators occur naturally in North Carolina , inhabiting bay lakes, rivers, creeks, marshes, swamps and ponds, with local populations distributed in patches along the entire coast.

Alligators become less common in coastal NC as you move from south to north. There are no gators in Virginia! In the past, the range of American Alligators extended just up into Virginia, mostly in the area of the Great Dismal Swamp. Located adjacent to Barefoot Landing, this acre park features hundreds of species of reptiles as well as other exotic animals, including a variety of birds and mammals.

Of course, alligators are the main attraction and Alligator Adventure has hundreds on site. Georgia is home to only one, the American alligator Alligator mississippiensis. Only two other species occur in North America — the native American crocodile Crocodylus acutus found in extreme southern Florida and the spectacled caiman Caiman crocodilus , an introduced species. Here are the search results of the thread Are there alligators in South Carolina?

Because this marshy area sits close to the oceanfront, it attracts various animals such as birds and alligators throughout the year. This rehabilitation center is also home to various exotic animals and several collections of cats, birds, reptiles, as well as lemurs. Of course, the main attraction here is the alligators, where hundreds can be found within and around the site.

Alligator Adventure is also known for its rare specimens of other reptiles, such as snakes; the Snake House displays snakes native to the Carolinas as well as venomous snakes from around the world. Here, you can spend your days camping or surf fishing in the finest waters that South Carolina has to offer. Huntington Beach State Park is also home to a freshwater lake where you will most likely see alligators in their natural habitat, as well as minks.

This purely magical place has something for everyone: trees, flowers, animals, and even a zoo that contains numerous indigenous species such as foxes, herons, alligators, and others. This gentle giant has lived at Brookgreen Gardens for more than 50 years, and you can observe one of the zookeepers present a talk during his exhibit which is available on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at PM from May through September. To get the most value out of your experience, be sure to purchase a ticket to give you access throughout Brookgreen Gardens.

Shuttle buses also make rounds every 20 minutes, which roam to and from the zoo and the Welcome Center, while a restaurant and cafe are also inside the site for breaks. Located on the south side of the city of Myrtle Beach, the Myrtle Beach State Park is a acre oceanfront paradise that offers hiking trails, beaches, and a fishing pier. Myrtle Beach State park has an on-site nature center that features exhibits on native species, tours, and educational programs, so be sure to bring a camera.

Lately, giant reptiles have also been seen a lot around the Grand Strand. Because alligators are so large with small legs, they prefer to travel in water, and with the recent dry weather in the past few months, they have been on the move. These creatures live in wetlands and swamps, but these environments are being destroyed through the development of homes, malls, and other structures.

Should you see an alligator in the Grand Strand, be sure to observe from a safe distance, and always remember never to feed them. Barefoot Landing, located at Hwy 17 S. North Myrtle Beach, SC, is a busy shopping, dining, and entertainment district in Myrtle Beach, but it offers much more than that.
