Best swimming holes near asheville.Top 9 Asheville-area swimming holes for a summer of fun

Easy hike, just under a mile round trip that leads to a 40 foot waterfall. The pool at the bottom is perfect for a cooling dip, but please be cautious around the falls; it is not recommended to attempt and climb or jump off the waterfall. Just relax and enjoy the view from the bottom!

Coontree also has river access where you can fish or swim. Where there's one swimming hole, there are often others. Most of the spots listed here will require additional research about driving directions and trails, and that's as it should be. Cell service does not reach most of these locations, so you'll need more than your smartphone to get you where you're going. The Wilson Creek area contains too many waterfalls and swimming holes to count.

Trails, streams and rock formations criss-cross the 49, acres of wilderness to the northeast of Asheville, creating endless opportunities for exploration. There are several well-known swimming spots and eight major waterfalls, but it's just as easy to find a special place that feels secret. Glynis James has worked at the Visitor Center there for 11 years, and she said newcomers to the area should check in with her before they embark on their journey — it's easy to get lost out there, and there's no cell service to call for a rescue.

Harper Creek Falls, however, is one of the easiest places to access in the entire area. It's one of the most popular spots in Wilson Creek and sometimes hosts people a day on a busy weekend, James said. It's actually two swimming holes in one. Two waterfalls, one above the other, create swimming spots at their bases. Their crystal clear depths are seemingly bottomless, and the very brave slide down the lower falls.

Shallow areas around the edges create wading areas. It doesn't look as deep as it is because it's so clear. Several miles deeper in the Wilson Creek area, Hunt Fish Falls creates a massive, rock-lined swimming hole at its base that James called her favorite swimming hole in the area. The pool is perfect for adults who like to swim but not particularly accommodating to waders. The hike from the closest gravel road is short — just 0. She reminds visitors to save some energy for the hike out.

The hike down to the waterfall which, naturally, means climbing back up is 2. But to reward you for your efforts, Schoolhouse Falls is a stunning waterfall you can walk behind. In front of the falls is an amazing boulder-strewn pool of clear mountain water that is a ridiculously cool place for North Carolina swimming at its finest! Accessible from the Looking Glass Overlook at Milepost , the site features small cliffs for plunging into the pool, a cascade of fresh mountain water into it, and no entry fee.

This setting looks deceptively tropical, but it is often shut down in the wintertime due to snow and ice. Technically, the Sliding Rock Recreation Area does have a swimming hole or, more appropriately, a plunge pool at the base of it. But most visitors come here for the natural rock slide. Swimming, in the sporty sense of the word, will be minimal here.

But Sliding Rock offers lots of fun and a great place to cool off. This Pisgah National Forest waterfall , which is near the famed Linville Fall s , is the place to go for a swim when visiting this section of the Blue Ridge Parkway. The hike to Upper Creek Falls is a rustic, root-filled loop trail that is only 1. This beautiful collection of cascades has an amazing swimming hole at the bottom of it, and the trees will likely be the only company you encounter! It's about a half mile hike from the parking area.

This popular summer swimming hole in Banner Elk includes a white sandy beach, swimming pier and fishing dock. The adjacent Tufts Memorial Park has a bath house and picnic tables. Owned by the Grandfather Home for Children. No admission fee, but they appreciate donations. Nearby, camp, picnic, hike and mountain bike. Float by one waterfall and hike to two others.

This secluded swimming spot in Pisgah National Forest is just 5. Slide down a ft. Bathrooms and showers are open and lifeguards on duty during warmer months. Enjoy riverside sunning and splashing at the Nantahala Outdoor Center. Just a few miles up river is Jump Off Rock. There is a small parking area along U.

Highway If you are rafting, you can park your raft, climb and jump! Swim or float in a pool below the foot waterfall in DuPont State Forest. Jump from a rope swing and walk behind the falls. Swim and sun on a sandy beach in the mountains at Lake Lure, near Chimney Rock.

Nestled in the Hickory Nut Gorge , the lake is surrounded by lush mountain tops and sheer granite cliffs.
