A friend of mine has joined a hunting club near Laurens, SC, that has five members. The southern part of the state seems to have a big influx of Florida hunters leasing large tracts of land. Deer season opens in the deep southern section of South Carolina on August Many of the landowners there have crop-depredation permits, so each individual can take quite a few deer.

I have a couple of friends in the southern zone, and I hunt with them four or five days a year, because I want to have the opportunity to take some of those big swamp deer on that land.

Most of that hunting there is rifle hunting, so you must take a little time to scout and find a place where you can get a nice buck close.

I spent several days there last year in a ladder stand in a magnolia tree waiting on a big buck to come by, and he never did. However, there are some great places to hunt there. You also may have the opportunity to take feral hogs then. Landowners are usually very happy to see those feral hogs shot, processed and go home in coolers of hunters. You may want to plan on a day or two for scouting before you start hunting.

If you use mosquito repellant, you really have to be conscious of the wind. With Thermacell insect repellant, I can still bowhunt and not be bothered by mosquitoes. When I hunt around home in the northern section of South Carolina, I rarely if ever use my Thermacell.

Ask anyone who trains for an event like a marathon or 10k and they'll likely spend a best half marathon training shoes minutes going into specific detail about the kinds of shoes they wear on race day. That's because the shoe racers wear as they vie for a personal record is one of the most important decisions they'll make. Best half marathon training shoes other words, any random pair of runners will not do.

And although there's a wide variety of running shoes intended to meet an even larger array of running needs, there are a few things that make a quality racing shoe.

As a lifelong runner, I've laced up на этой странице about every kind of racing shoe there is, from brands like Nike, Saucony, and Brooks. I've found along the way what does and doesn't make a good runner and have become especially adept at figuring out why one shoe might work better in some races than others. Below, I've compiled my six favorite racing shoes for everything from 10ks and marathons to training runs.

I've also included insight into how I tested each pair of racing shoes at the bottom of this guide. The Saucony Endorphin Pro is made for elite racers but has such an accessible design and comfortable fit, it should appeal to anyone looking to increase their speed. Pros: Best fitting shoe straight out of the box; bold but lightweight best half marathon training shoes attractive design; excellent pop from carbon fiber plates, particularly at faster speeds.

Of the shoes I tested, Saucony's Endorphin Pro felt the best right out of the box, almost like a cozy pair of slippers. This is thanks to its soft and breathable mesh FormFit upper with 3D overlays for added support. On best half marathon training shoes, the Endorphin Pro was fast, powering me through a virtual half marathon in one of my fastest times.

I liked the bold look; not only did they turn pedestrians' heads, they made me stand out so passing cars could steer clear. Where some shoes with carbon fiber plates in the midsoles tend to have a stiff, platform-like feel to them, the Endorphin Pros are more neutral, almost like a daily trainer. Saucony uses an S-curve design for its full-length carbon fiber plates, which follows the shape of the sole of your foot for increased comfort.

The Endorphin Pros are a fine shoe when you're just jogging but really reward when you run faster. When I picked up the pace, I could feel the carbon fiber plates pop, giving me some added spring to push me forward. This comes from Saucony's SpeedRoll design, which gives the Читать Pro a curved forefoot extending to the front of the shoe.

This helped keep me on my best half marathon training shoes during runs for faster leg turnover. Overall, I liked how Saucony stripped the Endorphin Pros to their essence to keep the weight down while still creating a snazzy, high performance shoe.

The stack height is 33mm in the heel and 25mm in the forefoot for an 8mm drop, which is pronounced but not significantly steep.

Despite the racing tech, the Endorphin Pros were one of the lightest shoes I tested at 8. The Hyperion Elite 2 from Brooks is a fast and stable racing shoe that's perfect for anyone who enjoys running 10Ks and half marathons. Pros: One of the fastest shoes I tested with a propulsive, rocker-style design; excellent stability thanks to wide outsole in the forefoot area; great cushioning from springy nitrogen-infused foam.

Cons: Inconsistent fit with loose heel collar and tight upper across the forefoot; finicky lacing system with short laces that are hard to double knot. The Brooks Hyperion Elite 2s were among the fastest shoes I tested but didn't feel particularly fast when I was running in them. That's a good thing since hitting my top speed felt effortless in these carbon-plated racers. But while the Brooks Hyperion Elite 2s are designed for marathons — and are certainly well-suited for that distance — I found the sweet spot for them to be half marathons and even races down to 10Ks.

The Brooks Hyperion Elite 2 features a slab of nitrogen-infused foam called DNA Flash in the midsole with a stack height of 35mm in the heel and 27mm in the forefoot for an 8mm drop. They're actually much easier to run in than walk, with a rocker-style midsole encouraging you to toe off and break into a full stride.

They're also gorgeous, with a patterned suede-like gray mesh upper that complements a bright yellow foam underfoot with Brooks logos on the sides. I wasn't crazy about the fit of the upper, and that's probably the only area where the Hyperion Elite 2 missed the mark. The stretch woven mesh felt tight in places I wasn't expecting — like across the forefoot — and a bit loose in other areas including around the best half marathon training shoes collar, where I couldn't get a full lockdown.

It was also difficult to double knot the short laces to prevent them from becoming untied. Once I started actually running in them, those quibbles were forgotten. Weighing 8. The carbon fiber plates made the shoes a bit stiff but that's common for this design. I was pleasantly surprised with how stable they were to run in since some race shoes are so narrow across the bottom they feel like ice skates.

My what percent of south korea is white – what percent of south korea is white mile race I tested them with was on a rainy day on a foot path that mixed soft gravel areas with harder asphalt, but I had best half marathon training shoes problems with grip from the Hyperion Elite 2s. Overall it was one of the most stable of all the race shoes I tested and among the fastest.

Pros: Incredibly bouncy shoe that reduces stress on your legs while propelling you forward; encourages efficient strides even after many miles; contoured, supportive fit. In short, the Nike Alphafly is all about the bounce. These were the bounciest shoes I've ever run in, and they gave me some much-needed spring during long runs. I also noticed some incredible energy return, thanks to its full-length carbon fiber plate that produced the snappiest response of the shoes I tested.

Nike calls it the Flyplate and it's partially exposed in the forefoot area of the outsole to give it space to flex. The thickness of the plate is scaled to the size of the shoe, so it's more flexible in best half marathon training shoes sizes and stiffer in larger shoes to produce the same propulsive effect. Another piece of Nike shoe tech that dates back to the s, the pods are loaded with pressurized air surrounding stretched tensile fibers that snap back every time your feet hit the ground.

Along with extra cushioning, the Zoom Air pods contribute best half marathon training shoes the bounciness of the Alphaflys while reducing stress on your legs. I felt this effect at mile 20 during a virtual marathon, a spot where I normally start dragging my feet.

With the Alphaflys, I could maintain an efficient, steady stride with the combination of Air pods and carbon fiber plates bouncing me along. The stack height of the Alphaflys is a tall 40mm, which makes it just legal for official races, but the drop is only 4mm, so it's not a very sloped shoe. I enjoyed the design, which felt natural to run in while protective thanks to the pronounced stack height.

Because the forefoot area of the Alphafly's outsole is so large to accommodate читать больше Zoom Air Pods, it provided ample space to toe-off while running. And these are shoes you want to lean forward in to enjoy the full effect of their spring.

If you do, they just might best half marathon training shoes you to your best marathon time. If you run in slippery or wet conditions often, the New Balance FuelCell RC Elite is the shoe you need; it offers a high level of grip, is ссылка на страницу best half marathon training shoes, and was one of the most responsive shoes I tested. Pros: Impressive grip thanks to triangular studded Dynaride outsole; lightest of all shoes I tested; sleek, fast-feeling fit.

Cons: Not suited for wide feet; better for shorter races, legs start to feel tired at longer distances; shoes run hot. But where the FuelCell RC Best half marathon training shoes real superpower lies is in its excellent traction that makes it one of the best road shoes I tested for sloppy race conditions including rainy downpours, slick surfaces, and mud.

In layman's terms, the shoe has small, triangular nubs of lightweight but durable rubber that are similar to the lugged outsoles you see on trail running shoes. On the FuelCell RC Elite, these triangle lugs are only in the mid and forefoot sections of the outsole running all the way up to a toe bumper on the front.

This provides a grippy area to toe-off from without weighing down the rest of the shoe. Teeth-like bits of rubber also reminded me of tiny track spikes and they even worked quite well on the track. I tested them on a sunny day and during a rainstorm while doing speedwork on an ancient, cinder track at a local high school and never lost my footing. The shoes also performed well during a long training run on a gravely rail trail. During a 10K time trial on the roads during a wet and rainy spring day, my feet hugged the ground while the FuelCell RC Elite 's engineered mesh upper did a decent job of keeping them dry.

The fit was skin-like best half marathon training shoes locked in, which also reminded me of the stripped-down design of track best half marathon training shoes. They didn't feel flimsy though, and the flared "wings" on the lateral sides of best half marathon training shoes shoe provided added stability. I wouldn't recommend them to runners with wide feet though; my average width feet felt a bit snug but best half marathon training shoes uncomfortable. The FuelCell RC Elite doesn't have as stacked a midsole as some of the competition but what's there, foam-wise, is soft, bouncy and protective.

The shoes layer FuelCell foam with a stack height of 34mm in the heel and 24 inches in the forefoot 10mm offset over a stiff full-length carbon fiber plate to create a smooth but responsive ride.

Hoka's Carbon X 2 helps improve your training, no matter if it's for a 10K or a marathon, and is a stable and comfortable shoe with a best half marathon training shoes of added cushioning. Pros: Excellent cushioning for long races and intensive training; very comfortable for a carbon fiber-plated race shoe; best half marathon training shoes heel foam provides stability on downhills. These carbon fiber plated shoes with their generous wedges of light foam underneath were made to go the distance at both fast and moderate paces best half marathon training shoes are a great option for racing and training.

Hoka built its reputation on making max cushioned shoes that are surprisingly light, but it hasn't been known for racing shoes. That changes with the Carbon X 2. These /7441.txt have a few familiar elements from its training shoes including a hefty 39mm heel stack height with 34 in the forefoot to create a 5mm drop. There's also the slightly curved Meta-Rocker design to help propel you forward, as well as the brand's comfortable bucket seat читать with padding in the flared heel collar.

But the Carbon X 2s aren't built for comfort alone; they're really built for speed. Their carbon fiber plate is positioned lower in the midsole than some competing shoes, so you don't feel it pop until further into your stride. Once you settle into a running rhythm though, it pushes you along steadily. The Carbon X 2's massive midsole is soft yet responsive while eliminating almost all ground feel. This посетить страницу источник good if you like a floating feel to your shoes but not for those who prefer contact with the ground.

The rear of the midsole features foam that juts out behind the heel, almost like a hoof. This design is native to some of Hoka's recent shoes and provides excellent stability on downhills and added protection for heel strikers. Runners who are forefoot strikers won't see as much best half marathon training shoes though and I found it a best half marathon training shoes hindrance on uphills.

At nearly 10 ounces in a men's size For longer races, like ultra-marathons, you'll appreciate the extra cushioning. On's Cloudstratus shoe is the ultimate cushioned racing shoe that excels on outdoor road runs, weighs less than 11 ounces, and is perfect for the half marathon to marathon runner. Pros: Tons of vertical and horizontal cushioning, great for longer runs, be it training or racing, works well on treadmills but is built for outdoor running. Best half marathon training shoes debate around cushioned running shoes can be a polarizing one best half marathon training shoes studies point to highly cushioned shoes as one of the culprits for weakened foot muscles.

Despite those studies, highly cushioned shoes are still incredibly popular as brands like Hoka above and On have offered their own unique take on the design for years. Although it admittedly took me several years to join Team Cushioned Shoe, I've quickly become a convert in recent years — and my favorite pair to both race and race train in is the Cloudstratus from On.

Designed specifically for outdoor road running, the Cloudstratus leans heavily into the brand's unique cushioning system, offering both horizontal and vertical cushioning.

На этой странице helps with the shoe's energy return and just best half marathon training shoes durability which is welcome for a shoe intended to be used on road runs. That energy return is apparent, too, as I noticed from even the first run in these how much they contribute to driving me forward on each step.

Both are worthy of a place in the top spot, but for different reasons. Even within the world of carbon super-shoe the Alphafly stands out as outlandish.

The updates from the Alphafly 1 make the shoe more accessible, with a wider, more stable base, higher drop and extra ZoomX foam under the Air Zoom pods to add more bounce to the forefoot.

Where some carbon plate racers offer versatility across different distances, the Adios Pro 3 is best used for longer efforts over half marathon. The Saucony Endorphin Speed 1 and 2 have long been our most talked about options for runners that want a shoe that can do it all. But aside from those changes the Speed 3 is still our top choice for daily training, able to tackle everything from easy day miles all the way up to race day thanks to the combination of a full-length nylon plate with the PWRRUN PB midsole foam and Speedroll design.

The Hoka Mach 5 is a lightweight, well-cushioned shoe that uses a dual-density midsole to deliver a soft but energetic ride that works well for a range of training runs. The exposed foam outsole does reduce durability, but the Mach 5 is a great pick for runners who want a simple daily trainer that delivers at a similar level to high-tech shoes like the Endorphin Speed 3.

The superb Pumagrip outsole means that the Nitro 2 is very at home on light trails too, which is great for those who mix up their surfaces during their daily training. The Flow Velociti Wind 2 is a great option if you want a versatile training shoe that veers more towards a conventional design. It feels lightweight on the foot and has a leaner midsole than many daily shoes out there, which means it can tackle faster effort easily whilst still having enough cushioning for slower efforts.

The thin upper is one of the most comfortable out there and makes for a supportive and breathable fit for faster sessions. Few cushioned shoes have hit the top of our lists as often as the Brooks Glycerin line.

The Glycerin 20 sees one of the biggest upgrades to the shoe in years due to the addition of a new nitrogen-infused DNA LOFT v3 that makes for a softer and bouncier ride.

Another shoe that has consistently impressed us for easy days over the years is the Saucony Triumph, offering a plush, comfortable ride with a midsole that feels both soft and bouncy. Whether you want a comfortable shoe for easy days or a long training run partner for your marathon race shoes, the Triumph 20 is one of the best options out there. We would say bag a bargain on the previous version if you can though, because not much has changed here. The Fresh Foam More V3 is a max cushioned shoe that offers a more balanced midsole than many of the softer options available.

When combined with the rocker design, that midsole helps promote an efficient turnover that makes long-distance runs smooth and enjoyable.

The firmer platform also makes the Cloudmonster more stable than others and better suited to faster running. Its relatively light weight also helps to make it a more versatile option than other maximally-cushioned shoes. For many people that want to own just one shoe to rule them all the Speed 3 is at the top of the list.

The Speedroll technology and PWRRUNPB can tackle easy runs and daily miles in comfort, but when you want to up the pace the shoe has no issues with tempo training, intervals or even race day, thanks to the addition of the nylon plate. Sadly New Balance is yet to update the shoe but it still remains one of the go-to options and you can also pick it up fairly cheaply at various places.

For added support, it uses midsole guide rails. The guide rails serve as bumpers for the foot, which helps prevent the knee from erratically moving side to side. This change provides more energy return and rebound on an even softer platform.

It does, though, perform admirably on easy runs that turn into spirited dashes back home. The Trace checks off all of the important running shoe boxes: adequate cushioning, some flex for toe-off, a responsive midsole, and all-around comfort.

For the v2, Brooks kept that much consistent—the biggest change is a new 3D-printed air mesh upper. The switch makes the Trace 2 lighter, and also aims to resolve an issue some testers experienced in v1: the upper material became slightly rough when wet, resulting in hot spots in the toe box.

The first thing I noticed about the Trace is how light it is. I feel that the Trace is both lightweight and comfortable enough to race the half-marathon distance, as well. Weight: 7. The ride is bouncy and propulsive, thanks to the carbon-fiber plate and Pwrrun PB midsole. The 3 provides support with a secure fit, but the upper itself is super minimal. Still, it did a good enough job of keeping my foot in place.

The only issue I came across was that the collar dug into my heels on some steep downhills. Jeff is Runner-in-Chief for Runner's World , guiding the brand's shoes and gear coverage. Murray said 2, campers pitched a tent in the park last year, but there were countless others who were turned away after traveling sometimes from other states, only to find the campsites were all taken. Legal Experts Explain Why the Pretrial Fairness Act Isn’t a ‘Purge Law’ in Illinois – NBC Chicago

A NEW law that will eliminate cash bail in the state of Illinois has been dividing opinions, with some describing it as a "massive threat" to public safety. The so-called " Purge" law will come into effect on January 1, Parts of the SAFE-T Act legislation are already in effect, while other pieces will continue to be rolled out in stages over the next few years – including the "Purge" law.

In the film, citizens were given 24 hours to commit all the crimes they wanted. This act will get rid of the cash bail system in its entirety. Those that instated the act believe it will reduce arrests and limit those put away based on the crime. There are 12 non-detainable offenses where the new law would end cash bail.

The law includes second-degree murder, arson, drug-induced homicide, robbery, kidnapping, aggravated battery, burglary, intimidation, aggravated driving under the influence, fleeing and eluding, drug offenses, and threatening a public official.

How much do you know about the American alligator Alligator mississippiensi? Decades ago, this reptile the largest in North America, in fact! Under law that led to the ESA, their habitat was put under protection, as were they from hunting. South Carolina has the second densest population of American alligators on a remote barrier island just minutes from downtown Charleston, Bulls Island. One of her favorite places for experiencing the wild side of our region is Bulls Island, and she has the inside scoop on its scaly residents!

Alligators live in freshwater environments and prefer still or slow-moving water. I occasionally see alligators in swamps or slow-flowing rivers, but most commonly near large ponds. Alligators are ectothermic animals meaning cold-blooded , so they take on the temperature of the world around them. In the winter they tend to brumate similar to hibernation underwater or in burrows. Fun fact from the Aquarium: Have you ever seen them basking in the sunlight with their mouths wide open?

This is another temperature-driven behavior! This sunbathing position warms them up, and the open-jawed manner cools them down.

Are there alligators in the sea islands of south carolina –

One-third of the attacks, however, involve repeated bites, major injury, and sometimes death, normally made by alligators greater than 8 feet in length and are most likely the result of chase and feeding behavior.

In most serious alligator attacks, victims were unaware of the alligator prior to the attack. Female alligators frequently defend their nest and young, but there have been no confirmed reports of humans being bitten by protective females.

Brooding females typically try to intimidate intruders by displaying and hissing before attacking. Alligators quickly become conditioned to humans, especially when food is involved. Habitually feeding alligators cause them to lose their fear of humans and can be dangerous to unsuspecting humans, especially children. Ponds and waterways at golf courses and high-density housing create a similar problem when alligators become accustomed to living near people.

Damage by alligators is usually limited to injuries or death to humans or domestic animals. Most alligator bites occur in Florida. Alligators inflict damage with their sharp, cone-shaped teeth and powerful jaws. Alligators prefer to seize an appendage and twist it off by spinning. Many serious injuries have involved badly damaged and broken arms on humans and legs on animals. Sometimes alligators bite or eat previously drowned persons.

Coroners can usually determine whether a person drowned before or after being bitten. Alligators sometimes excavate extensive burrows or dens to take refuge from cold temperatures, drought, and predators other alligators and humans. This provides federal protection for alligators but allows state-approved management and control programs. Alligators can be legally taken only by individuals with proper licenses or permits.

Florida, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina and Texas have problem or nuisance alligator control programs that allow permitted hunters to kill or facilitate the removal of nuisance alligators. Other states call state wildlife officials to remove problem animals.

Damage Prevention and Control Methods. Habitat Modification Minimize emergent vegetation. Drain ponds and borrow pits where appropriate and permitted. Frightening Prodding or other harassment can increase wariness. Hunting pressure increases wariness and avoidance of people. Hygnstrom, Robert M. Timm, and Gary E. Fun Facts Alligators are ectothermic — they rely on external sources of heat to maintain body temperature.

Myths Alligators have not been known to break the legs of full-grown men with their tails. Damage Identification Damage by alligators is usually limited to injuries or death to humans or domestic animals. Alligators are indigenous to the southern states including South Carolina, Georgia, Florida and even into Virginia. They are quite common in the Charleston area hanging-out in rivers, marshes, ponds, canals and even in golf course lakes.

Florida , which has the most human-alligator interactions, has recorded 24 deadly alligator attacks since — but 14 of those have occurred in the last 20 years, according to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission data. Department of Natural Resources, there have been 23 non-fatal encounters between people and alligators in the Palmetto State since as well as three alligator-related fatalities on the record.

All three fatalities happened in the past four years and each occurred in the Lowcountry. Since alligators spend most of their time sunbathing on the shores, there are often telltale signs of their presence.

Some of these markings might include large indentations or gouges in the ground and sliding marks where they reentered the water. However, alligator attacks are fairly rare—and they eat people even less commonly. Only a small fraction of attacks are deadly, and often the remains are found intact after an attack. There are many things you may encounter when swimming in the ocean. While alligators can tolerate salt water for a few hours or even days, they are primarily freshwater animals, living in swampy areas, rivers, streams, lakes, and ponds.

Caimans are not from the United States. There could be the possibility someone may have put a caiman in the lake, but not very likely.

The large reptile was caught in the surf and may actually have made his way up the southeastern coast — from Florida — by swimming, plain and simple. For the most part, the Upstate is spared from South Carolina reptile nuisances. The line is drawn south of the Lakelands, between the border of Aiken and Edgefield counties, and continues south of Saluda, Newberry, Fairfield and Lancaster counties.

Still, alligators pop up in the Upstate every once in a while. The American alligator is the only crocodilian native to South Carolina. The range of this reptile includes the Coastal Plain of the Gulf and Atlantic states, ranging as far north as Albemarle Sound in North Carolina, and westward to southern Texas. This is a large animal that can reach lengths of 5 m 16 ft.

American alligators occur naturally in North Carolina , inhabiting bay lakes, rivers, creeks, marshes, swamps and ponds, with local populations distributed in patches along the entire coast. Alligators become less common in coastal NC as you move from south to north. There are no gators in Virginia!

In the past, the range of American Alligators extended just up into Virginia, mostly in the area of the Great Dismal Swamp. Located adjacent to Barefoot Landing, this acre park features hundreds of species of reptiles as well as other exotic animals, including a variety of birds and mammals. Of course, alligators are the main attraction and Alligator Adventure has hundreds on site. Georgia is home to only one, the American alligator Alligator mississippiensis. Only two other species occur in North America — the native American crocodile Crocodylus acutus found in extreme southern Florida and the spectacled caiman Caiman crocodilus , an introduced species.

Are there alligators in the sea islands of south carolina

Things To Do Discover Attractions. Calendar Of Events. New in Town. They are active year-round, making for complex life in the wild filled with travel, romance, family drama, and of course, naps. During brumation, alligators just lie still underwater or in a burrow, they have dug. Contrary to are there alligators in the sea islands of south carolina deep sleep of a hibernating mammal, a brumating alligator can are there alligators in the sea islands of south carolina every sunny winter day we get.

All of us here have worn shorts in December or gotten sunburned in February, and on those days the gators appear out of nowhere, it seems, to soak up the sun are there alligators in the sea islands of south carolina the banks of their ponds. March 20th may be the first official day of spring, but the signs have been here for a few weeks. By gator call, I mean some poor alligator was spotted in a strange location and local professionals were called to assess the scene. I happened to be at Port Royal Elementary with some live, baby education gators giving presentations on alligator biology and safety once, and I missed all the action, but the juvenile gator in question this one particular time was safely escorted to a pond where he would be more comfortable.

I know what you might be thinking… a roaming alligator? Does that make it a nuisance gator? Should it have been killed?

I totally get any feelings of fear that may give you. Alligators are apex predators that can grow to awesome sizes and are known for their ambush style of hunting. However, that ambush hunting method means that if they are out of the water, they are not hunting.

They are totally exposed to their potential prey as well as other predators, and they know it. On land, a gator is either basking or traveling. Yep, spring and early summer mean gators are on the move. We have all heard that mother alligators take great care of their hatchlings, and she will be protective are there alligators in the sea islands of south carolina them for two years or so.

After that, they compete with her for food and are a threat to her future babies. She begins to вот ссылка them aggressively, and if they stick around she might eat them. The wander years continue until the young gators find their own safe water source not regularly patrolled by a much larger gator.

We rarely encounter wandering gators more than six feet long, but the big ones also have reasons to move around. Territory size depends mostly on food availability, and mating will influence movement as we enter summer.

Some of our larger gators walk pond to pond but we almost never see when that move happens. These big gators got big because they are smart. They are secretive and wary of people. They normally choose to walk over land in the middle of the night, undetected. Alligators of all sizes naturally mind their own business and avoid people.

However, if roads, houses, parking lots, and fences have been built in and around their habitat, occasional strange encounters just may happen. No need to expect it or fear it, but as the far smarter species capable of understanding and compassion, we can easily keep ourselves safe and maybe even help. If you see a gator walking on land, stay far back.

When approached out of water, gators will hold their ground and become defensive. If the gator is in a gated community that has hired security, give that security office a call first. Alligators have good привожу ссылку to be feared and /11591.txt, but they are seriously cool! They are ancient, unique predators that help define southern wetlands.

Nuisance alligators are created when they are fed, so never feed an alligator or it may seek out people! Each spring the youngsters will need to wander to find a place to live, and when we realize they are just trying to find a quiet, safe place we can be hospitable Lowcountry neighbors…and let them move along.

What Do Those Letters Mean? Subjects: General News , Technologist View. What those letters mean? Throughout the years, patients and family members have often asked what our credentials mean. The RT R stands for registered radiologic technologist. To maintain accreditation with the ARRT, radiologic technologists are required to earn 24 continuing education credits every two years.

By engaging in continuing education, we are encouraged and motivated to keep up with changes in our profession. These credentials indicate that technologists have received training and met additional standards in these areas. We are extremely proud that all of our technologists have met the ARRT standards and remain in good standing with continued training and education.

We believe this expertise is a primary reason why our patients receive high quality images. The accuracy of the interpretation and diagnosis made by our radiologists is dependent on receiving well positioned, quality images. Our technologists ensure this happens reducing the need for additional tests and while providing compassionate, reassuring care. See more Townsend, MD C. Most people find working a part-time job and attending an X-Ray program at the same time very manageable.

You must commit to study time and make room in your schedule for the practical training. It is important to note that, regardless of which program you choose, going to school requires a temporary lifestyle change, especially if you're already in the workforce, as many students are. During the program, you must stay committed to making that change to get through the program. Limited X-ray Tech courses: Because LMRT is an entry-level program, you will take courses specifically designed to introduce you to the field of radiology and help you not only gain the knowledge you will need in the field, but to also prepare you for your state licensing certification exam.

The LMRT program like the RT program will place you at a clinical site to complete your hands-on hours required for the program. Courses you will see in the LMRT program would include some of the following. In addition to general education, you will take courses specifically intended to expand your knowledge necessary to succeed as an X-Ray Tech.

Courses you will see in the RT completion program would include some of the following. As an X-Ray Tech in training, you will complete both online classroom and lab coursework and then an externships where you will practice what you are learning hands-on in a local hospital or clinic that partners with the school. While working on a tube called the Crooks Tube that was the precursor to fluorescent and neon technologies, he spotted a faint glow when he passed an electrical current through a very low-pressure gas.

Historians speculate he would not have seen that faint glow if he had not been colorblind, highlighting the benefits of seeing and experiencing the world differently from others.

After some experimentation with the phenomenon in a pitch-black room, he passed the device over his wife's hand on a photographic plate and found that the shadows of her hand bones appeared on the plate. At the time, he didn't know why these rays did this and they had no name. The term X-Ray quickly caught on with X representing an unknown as it would in an algebra equation. Despite the differences between LMRT and RT, this beautiful and inspiring origin story is something you can both share.

There are a lot of different ways to analyze DNA to answer many different questions. Some people think of genetic analysis as if it were a black box that you put samples in one side and out pops a tree diagram from the other end showing who is more closely related to whom. It is not quite that simple; you have to select the right test to answer the question you want answered.

To complete this research, I brought together Drs. Emily Latch and O. Rhodes, Jr. Samples were analyzed by sequencing portions of the mtDNA and by using microsatellites to look at variation in the nDNA.

The number of samples we collected and analyzed exceeded nearly every other study of this type. Certainly no one has analyzed a large mammal throughout a continent at this scale and this presented some challenges in data management and interpretation, using scientifically-based groups as units of conservation. The mule deer subspecies currently recognized have not helped us in delineating units of conservation and management. For instance, even the most recent textbooks contain the same stagnant, outdated information about mule deer subspecies because no one has reevaluated the same old list of subspecies names and designated ranges.

If mule deer subspecies designations are to be of value in management, they must be based on genetic, ecological, and physical differences between populations of deer. Identifying the different types of mule deer that exist may be helpful in addressing not only the overall subspecies questions that currently cloud mule deer conservation and management efforts, but also may allow us to highlight unique problems that face animals in a localized geographic area.

Once a type of mule deer becomes specifically sought after by hunters, it will be seen as an asset and protected, rather than poached, by locals. Thus, this work could lead to positive changes in the conservation of mule deer in Mexico and elsewhere by offering real incentives for conservation.

Record keeping categories must be based on real and consistently diagnosed differences. It is particularly important that we know the geographic distribution of black-tailed deer compared to mule deer in the Pacific Northwest because they represent different record-keeping categories and a clear delineation of the boundary is an important issue if we are to maintain the integrity of the record books. For example, deer harvested near the boundary of those two different types may be hybrid intergrades.

Fortunately, in the case of blacktail vs. This means we can immediately apply genetic tools to map the current distribution of blacktails and mule deer. Our research also was designed to resolve other issues. Peninsula mule deer in southern Baja California Mexico is mostly isolated from other mule deer and some of its physical characteristics, such as tail coloration, differ from mule deer in the northern part of the Baja Peninsula.

Are these southern baja deer sufficiently different to represent a good subspecies? Most interestingly, 3 island populations of mule deer around the Mexican Baja Peninsula are at least partially isolated from the mainland. Some of these populations apparently have been separated from mule deer on the mainland since the late Pleistocene. These deer are undoubtedly different as physical descriptions have indicated from other mule deer, but how different?

Two of these island populations of mule deer have been given unique subspecies names Tiburon Is. Genetic data can help us protect lawful hunting of mule deer throughout their range by giving us the knowledge needed to guard against ridiculous lawsuits to protect invalid subspecies designations. The evaluation of subspecies is more than just looking at some genetic results. Subspecies can differ genetically, physically, or in some important ecological ways.

We are accumulating some idea of genetic relatedness among these subspecies, but also have to consider the entire package that may make them different from others of the same species. We are not at the point of making definitive thumbs up or thumbs-down calls on all mule deer subspecies, but there are several clarifications emerging:.

We will continue to refine our knowledge with what we have learned from not only their genetic differences, but also physical and ecological uniqueness that might warrant recognition for conservation reasons. This process of continuing improvement with a science-based approach has always been, and will remain, a critical part of our successful system of conservation. Jim Heffelfinger is a Certified Wildlife Biologist who has worked as a biologist for the federal government, state wildlife agencies, universities, and in the private sector in Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona.

Jim has authored or coauthored more than magazine articles, dozens of scientific papers, and 20 book chapters in regional, national, and international publications. All that speciation is opportunists trying to say they discovered a species, when really most of the differences are due to adaptation to climate and habitat… not really genetics.

Florida panther is nothing but a mountain lion isolated by human development of the South. Same critter. Thanks, and you are right about academic competition, and also sloppy scholarship. In when Edward W. Elk were natives to Texas and all native Texas elk are Rocky Mountain Elk, as we proved in our peer-reviewed paper found here:. So yes the Southwestern elk are all the same subspecies and the size differences are adaptation, climate and habitat food.

Hi Jeff I saw blacktail deer at the foot level, just down from Cloudcroft in town of Mayhill in the Sacramento mountains of New Mexico. Were they indeed mule deer? Inquiring minds want to know!

A New Look at Old Subspecies Recent advances in genetic analysis techniques now allow researchers to evaluate genetic differences in ways that provide managers with meaningful ecological management units throughout the range of a species. Genetic analyses like microsatellites are allowing us to learn much more about how subspecies are related to one other. Building a solid, defensible basis for record-keeping categories.

A practical look at subspecies. The variety of ecological conditions black-tailed and mule deer live in have created variation in appearance throughout their range. Desert mule deer are smaller and lighter in color than their northern relatives, but it is not possible to draw a definitive line between desert and Rocky Mountain mule deer. They are confined to the western portion of the state, mostly in the Trans- Pecos but with some in the Panhandle and western Edwards Plateau. Mule deer in West Texas. White-tailed deer and mule deer look very similar, but a few key characteristics will help you distinguish between the two.

The average body size of mule deer is usually larger than white-tailed deer; however this is not a great identification tool because you rarely have both species standing next to each other for comparison. White-tailed deer can be recognized by their white bottomed tail used as a warning flag; mule deer tails are a more cream colored with a distinct black tip. The easiest way to identify mule deer, especially antlerless deer, is by the characteristically large ears in proportion to head size, which is where they get their name.

White-tailed deer have smaller, seemingly more proportional ears. Mule deer also have characteristic black markings on their forehead and around their ears, as can be seen in the pictures above. On bucks during the breeding season the antlers are also an additional indicator.

On mule deer the antlers are usually bifurcated the tines come in forked pairs. White-tailed deer usually have all their tines coming off one main beam, and antlers are described based on total points, such as 8pt or 9pt. Antlers alone are not a great indicator of species due to variation in individuals. There are also white-tailed deer racks with forked tines that can look very similar to a mule deer rack.

There are areas were people have reported mule deer with non-bifurcated racks similar to white-tailed deer or white-tailed deer herds with many bifurcated racks. If in doubt contact a TPWD biologist for identification help. Photo credit: TPWD. White-tailed deer in East Texas. Both mule deer and white-tailed deer have diets composed of 4 main food categories: forbs, grasses, browse, and mast. Forbs: broad-leafed herbaceous plants, a. Examples include sunflowers, lambs-quarters, and Illinois bundleflower.

Some domesticated grasses such as wheat are an exception and can be consumed when mature. Browse: Woody plants, usually the leaves, twigs, and sometimes bark is eaten.

This also includes the succulents such as prickly pear cactus that make up a large part of desert mule deer diets. Mast: The nuts, fruits, and berries of woody species. A good example is acorns. Usually only seasonally available. The proportion of the different food categories in the diet varies between species and regions. Forbs are generally preferred but some populations, especially mule deer populations, may have to rely heavily on browse due to habitat conditions.

Water is a critical component of both white-tailed and mule deer habitats.
