Powered by CITE. Etiologic factors include active loss through vomiting, diarrhea, gastric suctioning, drainage through operative wounds and tubes, burns, fistulas, hypermetabolic states, and drug-induced diuresis. Insufficient intake of water can be caused by nausea, immobility with inaccessibility of water, and lack of knowledge about the necessity of adequate fluid intake.

Patient Care. Assessment of the patient's hydration status includes monitoring lab data for such signs as increased packed red blood cell volume, increased plasma protein level, elevated specific gravity of urine, and increased blood urea nitrogen BUN out of proportion to a change in serum creatinine. In the absence of other problems, the serum sodium should remain within normal limits. Recording daily weight gives information about the amount of water gained or lost each day.

If there is a fluid volume deficit, intake and output measurements can give evidence of fluid imbalance. The urine appears concentrated and is usually well below the criterion of 50 ml of output per hour. Other objective assessment data include hypotension and a decrease in venous filling and in pulse volume and pressure.

The mucous membranes are dry, as is the skin, which loses its turgor. The patient may complain of thirst and the body temperature may be elevated. Patients at risk for profound and potentially fatal fluid volume deficit, as in severe burns, should be assessed frequently for mental acuity status and orientation to person, place, and time.

Measures to improve hydration status should take into account the patient's ability to drink and retain fluids by mouth, preferences for certain fluids, and whether hot or cold drinks are preferred. The goal of oral fluid intake should be about ml per day. Explanations about the importance of an adequate fluid intake and assuring the availability of fresh water and fluids attractive to the patient can help reach the desired goal.

Intravenous administration of fluids, especially isotonic saline, may be necessary if oral replacement is not possible. In severe and intractable fluid volume deficit a central venous catheter may be used to evaluate the extent of fluid loss and to guide replacement therapy. Factors contributing to this include 1 arterial dilatation, as occurs in the inflammatory process; 2 reduced oncotic pressure, as in hypoproteinuria particularly a deficit of albumin, which is responsible for 80 per cent of oncotic pressure , lymphatic obstruction, and increased capillary permeability, which allows water to escape into the tissues and produce swelling; 3 renal retention of sodium and consequently of water, as seen in renal failure ; 4 inadequate circulation of blood through the general circulation, as in congestive heart failure , or through the portal circulation, as in liver failure; and 5 overproduction or administration of adrenocortical hormones.

Last year I planted a couple dozen Leyland cypress trees, and only one survived last summer's drought, followed by the cold winter. I'll give you a short list of plants that might work for you. But even though these plants are considered deer resistant, deer are likely to still eat them when they are starving or when the plant is putting on new growth.

I started a new garden this year in Dripping Springs, and deer ate most of the things on the deer-resistant list. I had to put circular fencing that was 4 feet high around all my shrubs and trees, including Texas redbud, yellow bells, pecan, bur oak, Monterey oak, Blanco crabapple, Mexican plum, rough leaf dogwood and rusty blackhaw. They even ate several of my Juniperus ashei Ashe juniper. The only things not protected that they didn't eat were agarita, Texas persimmon, beautybush, wax myrtle and desert willow.

And bucks will rub the bark off a tree, often completely girdling and killing it, even if it is on the deer-resistant list.

So I suggest you provide protection for whatever you grow. Read up and choose what you want to use. I put up a 6-foot fence so I could grow some of the plants I love and protected all the rest of my plants with their own individual fences.

You can use an electric fence, baited with peanut butter, to get them to leave the area alone, or use the battery-operated lures that you operate the same way only to protect one shrub. You can use one of the long-lasting deer repellents, such as Liquid Fence, especially the first year and each spring while the new growth hardens, until the new growth is above the level of the deer.

And all plants need to be babied the first couple of years. Fill the planting holes with water a couple of times and let it drain out just before planting.

Water once a week every week without rain for the first spring and summer months after you plant, and then water deeply at least once a month or two weeks after a 1-inch to 2-inch rain for the first year. Thank you for this fascinating and fun information. I posted your article on my facebook timeline.

I use it for cooking sometimes. I usually put them through the spice grinder and keep them in an old spice jar so that I have them on demand. They have a sweetish, marjoram- or bay-like flavor that works well in barbecue or savory tomato soups. The number one reason to grow them, however, is to lure ruby-crowned kinglets to your garden in the wintertime. These birds are scarcely bigger than hummingbirds.

The males have a clump of red feathers on the tops of their heads that is mostly unseen, but which they poke up from time to time. On really cold mornings, they will huddle in clumps of 20 or mores, all shivering vigorously to keep warm. Also, these plants are dioecious, so buy one with berries on it to make sure you get a female.

Any idea how to protect our wax myrtles? In Baldwin County east shore of Mobile Bay Alabama, we are having the worst time keeping the deer from breaking the wax myrtle shrubs off at the ground along our patio. The shrubs are fledgling, only about 2 years old, and constantly assaulted at nighttime. The largest survivng shrub is not even waist level. Oh well, the deer are enjoying themselves, and the deer were here first.

I think they twist and snap off the base which is about same diameter as adult thumb. We started with 15 shrubs in We are down to 8 this summer.

On the whole, deer generally avoid eating ornamental grasses, which is great for gardeners since this group includes many tough, attractive and low-maintenance options. There are lots of ornamental grasses available. Some of the most dependable for our area include the many varieties of Miscanthus, muhly grass, panic grass Panicum virgatum and hardy fountain grass Pennisetum alopecuriodes. Another group of plants deer dislike is ferns, which are great for moist, shady sites.

Reliable perennial ferns for Southeastern North Carolina include Japanese painted fern, lady fern and cinnamon fern, all which go dormant in the winter, as well as autumn fern, Christmas fern, holly fern and southern shield fern, which remain evergreen throughout the year. Walker St. This Tree is absolutely beautiful in the spring with its purple blooms. To add even more color, we dressed up the front of the planting bed with some drift roses.

They will flower all summer long and come in a variety of colors. We will keep the wax myrtles at about 10 Feet tall so that we can have full privacy in this yard. Does the Battery Park Book Exchange have a sister inn? Thank you so much for the kind message and welcome to Asheville.

You are arriving just in time for the fall foliage. I have friends who just rented a home there, and I don't think they have as restrictive lease agreements. Some of that area like Montford is also somewhat walkable to downtown — but still a tad father out. The Residence Inn Marriott at Biltmore offers extended stay rooms and receives good reviews; we've been around there but have never stayed there. Tunnel Road has extended stay hotels, but that area is kind of wild and strip mall-ish.

I'd check Airbnb, too. The city is restrictive on Airbnbs — so they are usually on the outskirts of town — but they do exist. So, where should you stay in Asheville? First of all, I am a human being. Didn't think my "forum" way of typing would set off conspiracies. The reason I only have 6 post is because my first post, a month or so ago, was my first post. My ONLY reason for using this forum is to read different opinions. I am currently in the military so move around a lot.

Being that I do have a family, I thought this would be a great way to find out more about potential places we may move to. Relax everyone. I don't even know what my "reputation of 10" means. Location: Pittman Center, Tennessee. Bull City Rising. Before addressing your question, I want to address the fundamental bias of CD in general, and the WNC board in particular. This is, in and of itself, not a diverse board.

It skews white, upper middle class, and moderately conservative, IMO. When you ask questions about diversity here, you will get answers that imply everything from a belief in reverse racism to simmering political beliefs about why race shouldn't matter, so why are you asking, anyway.

My guess is it has something to do with the fact that WNC is disproportionately white, and since vacation homes aren't cheap, also higher SES, which correlates highly with conservatism. My wife and I are economically very fortunate, but also in our late 30s and liberal, so my perspective may be a wee bit different here.

There was a thread recently from an African-American woman seeking perspectives on being black in AVL, and I believe the first response was that she should stop referring to herself by race. In any case, to your question. In the mountain areas surrounding AVL, you'll find typically white communities with few Latino or black residents. I haven't seen enough interactions in Yancey to have any negativel sense of race, but really, the homogeneity of this community makes it hard to make any assessment on race – for instance, I've yet to see an interracial couple at the local supermarket.

In my experience in other places, rural, white communities tend not to be the most welcoming of diversity. Yancey has the reputation of having the highest per-capita concentration of working artists in the US, per its own press, yet I've never seen many signs of diversity among the arts community.

Inside Asheville itself, I think you'll find the city itself to be one of the most progressive in NC. Downtown and some of the urban neighborhoods are very welcoming on sexual and racial diversity terms. You will have a hard time finding perspectives on diversity on this board – and take what I'm saying with a grain if salt, as a white male, FWIW. The Mule. I agree with Bull City. People confuse diverse with creative and tolerant. Is Asheville tolerant? Are the surroundings beautiful?

But is it diverse, when it comes to racial and ethnic makeup? The numbers on the city-data site will bear that out. My normal answer to people who claim Asheville is diverse is that we have people that are fat, thin, athletic, normally-proportioned, tall, short, medium height, smart, dumb, average intelligence, fast, gay, straight, both, neither, slow, regular speed, happy, unhappy, liberal, conservative, politically independent, temperamental, even-tempered, logical, emotional, religious, atheists, agnostics, sun worshippers, rich, poor, white collar, blue collar, active, inactive, old, young, and middle-age.

The one thing nearly all have in common, including me, is they are white. Asheville is a lot of things, but diverse is no especially on the list. That is a rumor promoted by the City PR folks. Yes, you can look up the statistics but getting a people feel is most helpful. Asheville is diverse in many ways but racially, ethnically not so much. Please register to post and access all features of our very popular forum.
