Every year, data crunchers try to find out the best place to get an education in America. While the exact numbers will shift as more information comes in, the list of states ranked by education equality and safety tends to stay pretty static. On the other, they also take into account bullying incidents and other safety components.

When examining lists of the US states ranked by education quality and safety metrics, each state will usually have three numbers. But in this case, numbers can be deceiving. For example, even though Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New Hampshire are in the top 5 states based on education quality and safety, they are only there because of their K systems. The three states hold the 27th, 30th, and 37th spots on the higher education ranking list. But again, even though those states can provide the best higher education, their K capabilities leave much to be desired.

On that front, Washington is the highest-ranked among these five states, despite sitting on the 19th place of the K ranking list. Ultimately, most states have a mid-tier ranking for both higher education and K facilities. For example, Missouri and Montana both hand around the 20—30th place on all counts. You will still want to look for the same signs of abandonment as before; structural problems, broken windows, roofs that need repair, overgrown lawns and gardens, and cracked parking lots. Your best chances are going to come from small rural areas where you can probably find an old abandoned barn or two.

Talk to a Realtor. It can show them details about foreclosure, buildings that have been on the market for years, or properties that owe a lot in back taxes. Without outright saying these properties are abandoned, they are pretty big clues. To narrow down your search to try to find abandoned properties, try changing the filters to see properties that have been on the market the longest, or by the oldest build year.

You should also try keyword searches. Area groups can be extremely specific or show very generalized areas depending on what you search for. You can bring up results for cities, states, or even the entire country. The group searches are handy if you want to search for locations within a city or state, or even if you want to find a specific type of building. Some photographers will use abandoned buildings and properties as focal points for their work. They travel and document the spaces that used to be used, and show the spaces in their current state of abandon and ruin.

Photographers may not give out exact addresses for everyone to find these locations, but they may tag a location when they post the pictures or even take photos with clues on where they could be.

A permit is required for all camping. Primitive camping is available on Cedar and Murphy Islands beaches year round which requires no prior arrangement. All arrangements for camping should be made with the supervisor of the Santee Coastal Reserve.

Just a small dirt loop with room for a few vehicles. No facilities elect or water, boondocking only. There are no restrictions that I know of for use of this area, it is State owned no signs, no patrol, or anyone to bother boondockers. No drinkable water here so bring in your own. Area sometimes can be busy from cars and boats and occasional loud parties from houses across the lake.

The road in is Gravel. Forest Service website says there's currently no drinking or running water of any kind at the campground so that may pose an issue if you don't bring your own. The park offers vault toilets, fire rings, showers when the water is working and garbage cans. This is a seasonal campground that's open from May 1 through Nov.

We walked along the beach at sunrise, climbed the stair historic lighthouse , mountain biked on the trails lined with prehistoric looking foliage, and sea kayaked through the sloughs. Seeing the damage done to this island by hurricanes Mathew and Irma, reminded us of the power of Mother Nature and the real price of global warming. Many of the state parks along this coastline experienced millions of dollars in damage, so supporting them during their recovery is truly important.
