People know that I'm generally a pretty big fan of policy blending. It's essentially a process of combining term insurance with a whole life policy to increase the MEC limit on a whole life contract so that more paid-up additions can flow into the policy.

This means more of your outlay goes towards PUA's which means the policy has a higher cash value from the start. This is the design feature that really separates whole life used primarily for death benefit from whole life used for cash accumulation purposes.

It requires a little deeper understanding of what's going on, and so isn't always a first choice method among newer or less skilled agents and there's a big difference between an agent who has been in the business for 10 years and an agent who has had 10 first years in the business. If you've never run into the concept before, a Modified Endowment Contract hereinafter MEC is a limit of cash that can be placed in a life contract before it changes from a life insurance contract to a MEC.

MEC's were put in place by Congress as one way to prevent people from placing limitless amounts of cash into life policies so they could avoid taxable liability of the money as it grew over time it was also put in place in part as an anti-money laundering provision to prevent certain members of organized crime from using life insurance contracts as a means to launder money, oh how times and sophistications have changed.

The MEC calculation is based on the the amount of money that would be required as net Surrender Cash Value in order to make the contract paid up based on the contracts guarantees. For a more in dept discussion on what a MEC is, we'll be posting something a little later and link from here. That's the question blending answers.

As we've already stated, blending is simply adding more death benefit to the policy in the form of term insurance really cheap term insurance so we can place more cash into the policy. What's happening is, you're setting the policy up with an extra term death benefit that one day will either be replaced with death benefit created by the extra cash you place into the policy, or surrendered.

But this extra term death benefit increases the MEC threshold to allow for more money to enter the contract. And all of that extra money is that goes in, goes in as that super charger of a whole life contract we refer to as a Paid-up Addition. This is a frequent question, and one thing camp Yellen gets right is the mention that blended policies pay much lower commissions.

Pam refers to this in a horrendously confusing manner. She claims that Bank on Yourself policies are designed in a way that pay significantly lower commissions to the agent. Client, but I know I'm going to make a lot of money off this so I'm super excited, and you should be, too! However, let's not hang all of the insurance agents out there just yet. There are, after all, even more nefarious souls lurking about. Most insurance company would much rather you spend that money on base premium, too.

It turns out that poorly designed cash value policies are good someone as it turns out not you, but the insurance company and they don't intervene when they see a policy design that could be improved with a few tweaks it's non of their business apparently. So, regretfully, it's also true that many times insurance agents are more the pawn in a sales manager or wholesalers mission to get a promotion to a fancy sounding title at the Home Office, this is why experience and know how matters.

There's really not much more to it than that. Blending is simply a way to keep the MEC limit higher, so more of your premium can go towards PUA's than towards base insurance premium. There are, of course, a few different considerations that one should weigh when starting this sort of plan.

For that, you'll need a little one-on-one time with your agent. However, it's not nearly as complicated as some people make it out to be. Keep base insurance death benefit low, and load with PUA's. There is one exception, which we'll be touching on later. It has to do with High Early Cash Value products and shorter pay products like 10 and 20 Pay products.

More on that later. You mentioned in the Penn article about Penn only doing a term blend ratio and that other companies are significantly higher. Does that mean that with other companies you can achieve higher CV with a blended policy than with Penn? Good Article! Love this stuff. Great Article! It really depends. It might be okay for retirement planning so long as the policy was designed properly.

Again, it really depends on how well the one you have was designed. Can you mention the companies who have the 10 and 20 pay options, and, if any also offer a Paid-up at 65?

Check out this post for carriers that we would recommend for cash value accumulation. NYL is largely your problem. They also tend to report possible MEC violation way sooner than other carriers probably a conservative measure on their end. My wholesalers have no clue when I ask them about how to illustrate this.

Is there an illustration tutorial on your website? I mostly use Guardian and Ohio National. I now feel that I incorrectly wrote my own policy. As I wrote a 1. Sounds like I should have wrote k base and 1. However, when I illustrate this given equal total premium I end up with more cash at age 65 with the L99 that I wrote. I really want to do this right for my clients. I would love a tutorial on how to run these illustrations.

I am in Colorado, so hopefully you will not view me as a competitor. Thanks for the great blog! Generally speaking, the 10 Pay or L99 will work well when blended. Guardian has imposed new rules on new policies issued for the ratio of allowable paid-up additions to base whole life premium. This has significantly dropped their competitiveness, but their not alone in doing this. MassMutual, Ohio National, and New York Life have long imposed limitations of this ratio, which has caused us some degree of frustration.

As far as a tutorial goes. Keep an eye out later this year for more information on something that might prove helpful to you. Thanks for putting together such a great blog, its truly a phenomenal resource. Having been frustrated with my dealings with agents in the past, I got my license so I could help friends and family on the side when they ask for help after having bad experiences.

I want to set them up with a reasonable death benefit, but to also maximize early cash value in case they need to borrow against it to support their aging parents, so I want to get the blend ratio up as high as possible. I have a question about policy blending. This does indeed allow me to considerably overfund via PUAs. I cannot find anything to the effect. Vendor List Privacy Policy. Menu Contact Us About. Let's Talk about Modified Endowment Contracts If you've never run into the concept before, a Modified Endowment Contract hereinafter MEC is a limit of cash that can be placed in a life contract before it changes from a life insurance contract to a MEC.

Believe it or Not, that's really it. Did you use a variable loan rate or fixed? If Var. Hi Miriam, It really depends. And,do these policies offer any benefit for cash value acccumulation? Hi Dan, Sure thing. Thanks in advance for your guidance.. Hi Brandon: Thanks for putting together such a great blog, its truly a phenomenal resource. Hi, I have a question about policy blending. Thanks, Gin Reply.

LaZoom offers a variety of comedy tours — some for the entire family while others are designated for those of the legal drinking age. Walk into a kitschy bar full of cat pillows and rubber chickens. This is another great mountain biking area. Like its award-winning foodie scene, Asheville is famous for its craft breweries. We live for ambers, stouts, reds, and anything infused with spice. We cannot even begin to keep up with the Asheville breweries and their wild Count Chocula concoctions. However, we are all here for it. If you want to see a massive beer factory, head to Sierra Nevada for their Oktoberfest — order the duck fries — or even New Belgium for a pumpkin brew. Those are both more touristy but delicious breweries.

We live for corn mazes. The 5-acre corn maze is wickedly large and confusing. You have to try it. We also highly recommend using the restroom before you enter but also making sure that you are well-hydrated.

Buncombe and Henderson counties may still be quite warm weather-wise. Snap a picture of the map on the wall for when you get desperate. There are no clues along the way, and if you go during a quiet weekday, you might be one of the only ones out there.

We have certainly been around the donut block so we can safely say that Sky Top Orchard makes our favorite donuts, ever. Our first time here, we had no idea why everyone was sitting around gorging on donuts instead of playing and apple picking.

Now we get it. Walk up to their window to watch as the staff makes fresh-out-of-the-frier donuts. They shake those steamy bad boys in cinnamon and sugar, and they land straight in your mou …container.

Fair warning: the donuts are beyond popular, and they may run out on weekends. Sky Top serves hard cider as well as cider slushies to wash down that clump of delicious gooey goodness.

After a donut, for more Asheville fall activities, head to the bamboo forest and say hello to the goats. Try your luck at the apple cannon. Even on weekdays, Sky Top stays pretty busy. There are multiple waterfall hikes, and we suggest seeing Hooker, Triple, and High Falls — around a 3-mile trek.

Further in the forest, find Bridal Veil Falls where Katniss cools her burning leg from the fireballs. DuPont will grow incredibly busy, though, and their multiple parking lots may fill up, especially by mid-day. There are on-site restrooms and a visitor center. Please exert caution around all waterfalls and learn more about waterfall safety. People have died. A few top wineries near Asheville we recommend:. We love sitting on the hill overlooking the grapes. Their tasting room has floor-to-ceiling windows too. Choose between a wine or mead tasting, and they have food on-site.

Paul Mountain Vineyards — St. Paul grows 14 varieties of grapes. Grab a glass of wine and sit on the patio overlooking the vineyards or chill inside by the fireplace. Here, you can get all litany of breakfast sandwiches— from Southern-style pulled pork with pimento cheese and collards on a housemade biscuit, to a smoked trout bagel with cream cheese.

Like the meal I had only days before at The Local in Boone, NC, I wanted complete silence when eating my gluten free biscuit so that I could savor the delicious flavors. The last time I had a biscuit so delicious was from Honest Biscuits at Pike Place Market in Seattle coincidentally founded and owned by an old acquaintance in Raleigh.

The Rhu knows how to make a fluffy, melt in your mouth biscuit. Super good spot. And for as much as I'm a straight black coffee guy, their teas are really good. Lots of odds and ends for sale as well, including putting together picknick baskets with a day heads up notice.

It does feel like a bit of a small space for how popular it is – granted there is upstairs seating but we didn't check that out. Still, worth checking out. Super hipster spot in the middle of downtown.

Fresh artisanal bread, delicious breakfast sandwiches. Great selection of interesting herbal and nonherbal teas and coffees. Just what we were looking for for breakfast. No exaggeration! Lavender latte is also fantastic! High Five Coffee has multiple locations across the city and is a family-owned Asheville coffee shop. They serve up coffee classics plus a few of their own specialties with beans roasted from Counter Culture Coffee in Durham.

High Five Coffee is a local chain that visitors are apt to see all over Asheville, and with good reason. This family-owned small business is all about the loving details.

Absolutely delicious!!! Hand crafted with care. Even the foam has a design on it. Friendly, warm, inviting. The Spicy Mocha was amazing!!!

Had my 1st experience at High Five coffee, in downtown Asheville, today. It definitely has a cinnamon taste, with a mild kick from the cayenne. The sweet scone had hints of all spice and chocolate chips. It was a nice pallet cleanser between the 2 coffees.

Go drop if next time you are downtown!! We stop at High Five everytime we're in town! They never disappoint, it's always consistent and so delicious! Service is very helpful, friendly, and fast! Pastry shop. Old-world coffee shop offering locally roasted brews along with various European-style pastries.

So many tempting options! Enjoyed our tea! The diamond cake was pretty good, just a tad dry but that may have been the style. Really hoping to try another next time we stop by!

Such a breath of fresh air to be around so many friendly people. While this coffee shop offers specialty drinks, including beer, the ambiance is the real draw of this shop.

Wait, where the heck am I?. Did I just enter a magical fairy world in the middle of downtown Asheville? What a wonderful place to stop to grab a refreshing drink. The staff is super friendly and the environment inside is super cozy. Adorable place to grab a coffee on the run. Their Coffee Soda is unique, but I highly recommend it. I got the pistachio and rosewater syrup with a splash of cream, and my fiance who usually hates trying new things ended up ordering one for himself.

We've had their coffee before. Some of the best in town. This last visit was disappointing. The covid restrictions apparently self imposed are quite restrictive. Ordering is a hassle, the seating area is very small next to the front door which makes for a cold experience on a winter day , and the mask restrictions are airline-like wear your mask between sips.

It's very sad to see a great business suffering from so much self-imposed pain. Hope they make it so that someday I can go back. When only quirky items will do, you cannot go wrong with a trip over to the Asheville Emporium. Chockfull of new and used items, this ultra-cute gift shop highlights local artisans across all the artistic disciplines.

Across their bright, clean shop, you can find: smokymountains. I know sometimes you want to avoid souvenir type shops for fear of entering tacky-ville, but the Asheville Emporium has a surprising number of cool local gifts. They also have a section at the back where they print their own T-shirts, so cool to see that set up.

Fun merchandise and amazing customer service! This store has great merchandise and truly amazing customer service. I bought some cute items there this weekend and managed to leave my phone behind.

Not only did the store staff search for and locate my phone, the store owner and the staff arranged for a member of the team to bring it back to me across town. It was so incredibly nice, and truly the type of customer service that's almost impossible to find these days. Thank you Asheville Emporium for helping to make my weekend so terrific!

I will definitely be back! Looked everywhere for some semi low priced items to bring back as souvenirs. I typically like to get something with the areas name and or what they stand for, found the perfect Xmas ornaments showing the hiking and mountains, hand carved by the owner!! My type of local shopping. Store with a lot of variety. Asheville souvenirs. It is in the expensive end since a lot of it is locally made.

In a very walkable area. Antique store. Customers from around the world shop here for the selection and prices. Bryant Antiques is a 9, square foot antique store with over 70 dealers. Better than a museum. Overall I enjoyed looking at this huge antique mall and I did find some jewelry to buy, but it was a more arduous process than it should have been. Lexington Park Antiques is an all-in-one shop for anything antique or vintage. The place is so large it feels like a market with dozens of unique stalls.

There is thrifty clothing, old leather work, collectibles from Asheville, and other cool finds that could belong in a museum. It has a family owned feel, and the staff was very friendly and helpful. They do accept card payments but do not accept American Express. Coffee shop. Summit Coffee is a specialty coffee franchise across North Carolina.

Very friendly staff, second time here and walked an extra half mile past two other coffee shop to return! Dog friendly, Baisie was waiting for her pupcup when I ordered… she knew this place!

I speculate that management sets the example for the staff, same great friendly service twice with totally different staff. Great coffee – La Marzocco machine means they are serious about coffee. Not much for pastries, but that was OK – the great coffee made up for it! This little coffee shop is located on a shady street with a fair amount of outdoor seating to enjoy your beverages.

Indoor seating also available though limited. Pleasant and efficient service. We got iced coffee, earl gray iced tea, tangerine ginger iced tea and San Pellegrino. All were excellent. Visit this shop for single-origin roasts, custom blends, and specialty espressos served in a clean, modern environment. PennyCup Coffee Co. Great, off the beaten trail, relaxing, sit awhile, VIBE!

My cappuccino was excellent and so was their gluten free banana bread. And by drain I mean my husbands lap. Maybe the coffee was good?

BTW… toilet does not flush. Not even a little bit. Take out only. I went in early morning, no music playing, and lukewarm service.

Maybe the two guys were having an off day. I asked about seating inside and I was told take out by the guy who rang me up. He then proceeded to sit down at the other end of the counter and looked at his phone while the other coworker made my drink and finished fixing the bagel. Great teamwork. Located in The Shops at Biltmore Station, this shop has a great selection of bed and bath items such as fine European linens, soaps and aromatherapy candles are matched with excellent, knowledgeable service.

Custom orders are handled with attention to complete satisfaction. Read more about Porter and Prince, Ltd. Beautiful store and great customer service! Definitely coming back:. Terrible customer service people in this store. Lady with blonde hair very rude. Followed us around the store. Never been treated so poorly ever.

We were staying at the Inn at the Village at the Biltmore. I assure you we are not thieves and she was so offensive that at one point was less than 2 ft from us at all times.

I will never purchase anything else from this store. Basically felt like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman. Good job blonde lady with bad attitude. And your little cohort. I will be back to the Biltmore next year and will make sure we do not come to your store!

We will keep on walking! I really really LOVE this beautiful store and the ladies that work there always do a fabulous job.

The main problems I and others that shop with me are they hardly ever have good sales or specials. If I were to have a sale, I would advertise it the whole week. I live 2 hours away so to advertise the sale that very day is not a good strategy. Also, because of the far drive and paying full price for many pieces I just went to a sale, and was informed that a certain piece they had would never go on sale are very discouraging.

I overheard several ladies in the store whispering how they were going to look online. I know they price match here but the vendors rarely have sales and if they do you the customers have to look everyday for them.

I left four stars because this store really is breathtaking, and the people are truly lovely, but I wish they would be a little more competitive in pricing. The museum has eighty machines ranging from antique pinball to classic video games such as Pac-man which are all playable. Entrance is restricted to a maximum of eighty people at a time to ensure every visitor has a machine to test their skills on.

Talk about nostalgia on so many levels. This museum was incredible! We were expecting something totally different, like where we were going to learn the ins and outs and history of the pinball machines but it was literally rooms and rooms of vintage pinball and arcade games that you could play.

Then the decor here was out of this world. Fun, cool… it really sent me back to my childhood. We spent about an hour here, no wait, lots of space, and hand Sanitizers.

They have beer too which makes this experience even better! Go go go! We randomly came to this place because we were on the waitlist for lunch at a restaurant. My friend tried different versions of pinball from different periods of time. They also have digital version and few limited editions. So, your wristband is valid for the day, which is great! Awesome theming and a good mix of pinball machines along with arcade classic cabinets.

Even the bathrooms are themed! This is an incredible arcade spot to visit. Mentioned on 1 list. Bring Fido along as you stroll through the delightful sculpture gardens, visit a working artist's studio, learn more about Asheville's early history, explore a collection of rare automobiles, and browse an expansive collection of American craft. Grovewood features arts and crafts from over artists located throughout the United States.

While there we visited the car museum, and the Homespun Museum. It is free to visit but I recommend a donation. Beautifully maintained museums and grounds. Neat place to visit. The gentleman in the Car Museum was very friendly. The staff in the store was not very friendly, one especially.

I still say visit, there's a lot of history here. Oh, what a gorgeous place to feast your eyes on beautiful art of all kinds! From the sculpture garden out front to the two floors of inventive, beautifully crafted art indoors, it was a wonderful, visual treat to visit Grovewood Village. The staff were friendly and helpful. I pored over beautiful, one-of-a-kind paintings, furniture, pottery, and much more, wishing I had unlimited funds to buy the beautiful carved dresser, the playful koi bench, the fox painting on wood Visit Grovewood's web page for a taste of what you'll find on site.

Better yet, make a personal visit, or two, or four. Show 4 more. The Thomas Wolfe Memorial is a rambling 19th-century mansion on North Market Street in Downtown Asheville dedicated to honoring the famous American author whose writing was inspired by the city and its people. The museum contains over eight hundred items pertinent to the writer and the era of his literary works. In a time-capsule fashion, the rooms of the house are furnished as they were during the period Thomas Wolfe was resident in the property and it was functioning as a boarding house.

The tours run every hour starting at am and the last at pm. The guided house tour takes around 45 minutes.

The introductory film about Thomas Wolfe's life runs about 20 minutes and provides a lot of background information. The Museum is also very informative. I liked the new exhibit that showed how the house was originally and then how it was after the first additions and the second additions.

The house is well kept and filed with many historical treasures. There is a small gift shop in the museum that sells books about Wolfe; Wolfe's books; toys; photos and postcards. Free parking in front of the house. Historic house museum restored and preserved as it was when Thomas Wolfe lived there in his childhood.

Interesting house tour. If you read Look Homeward Angel, it brings to life the many scenes from the book. If you haven't, it's a well preserved piece of history from the early 's and gives a glimpse into Asheville at that time. George W. Wander through more than 25, square feet of European and American antiques, fine art, and decorative art, as well as Southern folk art, potter, and furniture, and African art.

Fido is welcome to join you while you search for your next fantastic find. Whether you are a designer, collector, or decorator, chances are you will find something you want to bring home after visiting this antique shop.

Pricey for a tour, but its gorgeous! We got the audio tour which I high recommend, we went when they were decorated for Christmas and I am so happy we did. For us this is a once in a lifetime thing to see it and it was so worth it! Beautiful mansion on and even more beautiful view of the land they own. The drive to the house was long but beautiful! The food was pretty good and the little shops are adorable! Pictures do not do this place justice. Just an amazing and beautiful place.

Lots of parking where you can either walk or take a trolley to the estate. Make sure you get your timed entry tickets. If you can try to eat at The Stables restaurant on site. The audio tour is a great add on to explain all the different rooms throughout the Manson. Get to see how the rich, old money rich, people lived. Every room has amazing architect and amazing pieces of furniture. The swimming pool down stairs was just ridiculous. You get to see how the help lived and how the ran and maintained the house.

It takes a few hours to take the tour. After going through house you can walk around the grounds. Very easy to spend a whole day here and still may not see everything. I hear Christmas is a great time to come, but the spring flowers were wonderful too. Make some plans and take a visit to this place, we'll worth your time! What a great experience! Walking through this beautiful estate was like going back in time! Kudos to the curators for keeping this amazing piece of American history alive!

The restaurants on the estate we also liked. Overall one of the high points of this year! Science museum. Small science museum featuring playful, hands-on exhibits, plus various events for children. The museum may be small, but it has some powerful interactive exhibits which will blow any visitor away.

Step inside the Hurricane Simulator and feel the full force of a storm or create rain in the French Broad River Water table display before getting up close to the skeleton of a Tyrannosaurus Rex or a robot used to explore Mars. Small but mighty.

Staff enthusiastic and courteous. Kids years old were entertained for 90 min and plenty for adults to learn too. We only had one day downtown and are glad we included it. We enjoyed our time here, albeit it was a tad small for my 10 year-old's interest, but still fun and educational. I overheard one of the staff members speak of a future expansion, so be on the lookout for the possibility of that. Museum very small, not really overjoyed that we went there and visited.

My daughter seemed to like it, but didn't protest when we wanted to leave after 45 minutes. Maybe it will grow more in the future and become bigger and better, hopefully. I didn't have any photos from inside the bookstore but it is absolutely adorable!

They have the genres sectioned off perfectly, so you know exactly where to go! Employees were extremely helpful and sweet! They also had a blind date with a book section, the book was wrapped up so you couldn't see what it was, and a typed synopsis was on the front to tell you what it was about without giving it away! This bookstore is so charming and well curated.

A must-visit in Asheville! Cozy book store with a good selection. They have some great picks displayed on the tops of the bookcases in the fiction section and also a bestseller section near the front. And a nice surprise was a selection of books that you can buy without looking at the cover. The books are individually wrapped and have things such as genre and brief descriptions writing in the front of the wrapping. You choose your book based on that and when you buy it, you get to unwrap your surprise book.

Lovely idea. South Asian restaurant. Indian chaat street snacks plus homestyle platters thalis in a funky, laid-back space. The brightly colored walls and murals are the perfect match to the vibrant flavor diversity of its dishes from thalis, to uttapam, street burgers and and snacks. Last time we were in Asheville, this place was boarded up because of the pandemic.

Now it's open, and we've found another place to eat when we're here. We were seated at the bar immediately got there around pm on a Saturday , and picked up the drink special frozen raspberry daquiri , then got an appetizer and two chicken Tikka wraps, which were incredible.

The bartender was friendly and chatted with us about everything, and even recommended her favorite chutneys and said they make their own bitters in-house.

If a deer fawn is found alone in the woods, leave it there. Its mother has not abandoned it; she is probably nearby.

Many people who come upon a solitary spotted fawn in the woods or along a roadway mistakenly assume the animal has been deserted by its mother. Young fawns like this have not been abandoned, but are still in the care of a doe. The apparently "helpless" deer fawns born during April, May and June in South Carolina will begin daily movements with their mothers in about three or four weeks.
