It's just a few miles from downtown Asheville and Biltmore Estate. For the most upscale shopping in the mountains, head to downtown Highlands. It's a popular area for affluent travelers, many with a summer home in the area. This is one of the highest towns east of the Mississippi River, with an elevation at 4, feet.

Nearby are many beautiful waterfalls, including the roadside Dry Falls. Nestled in a valley surrounded by the highest peaks in eastern America, including Mt. Mitchell, Burnsville's small downtown is dominated by the Town Square with towering trees. The Mount Mitchell Crafts Fair transforms the streets into a festival for craft and art lovers. Their small downtown area is filled with restaurants, galleries and interesting local shops.

And it's only 10 minutes from both downtown Asheville and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Twice a year, they host the big Weaverville Art Safari with dozens of artists opening their studios to visitors. Mitchell and Linville Falls. This tiny town of residents is perhaps best known for its hot mineral springs. Located north of Asheville at the junction of the Appalachian Trail goes right through downtown and the French Broad River. Hike from town up to Lover's Leap for a great view of the town.

Visit for many festivals and gem mining. The largest downtown in western North Carolina outside of Asheville is filled with historic buildings and updated streetscapes with flowers and art. Find many spots for outdoor dining and a big variety of quality shops and galleries along a six-block stretch of Main Street. Since the late s, tourists have flocked to this tiny railroad town of residents. Main Street has many longtime businesses, including fantastic galleries and restaurants.

A must stop is the Pace's "old time" General Store that is part museum. Since is Thompson's Store and Ward's Grill. Learn about the Saluda Grade at the Depot. They also have a train museum! This cute little mountain town is full of surprises. This little town is only a few minutes north of Asheville on I and the perfect place to grab lunch and explore for an afternoon.

Highway intersects I here and you can follow it north into the Linville Gorge Wilderness. I highly recommend both. Sierra Nevada is a destination in itself. You can tour the brewery, eat at their on-site restaurant, or shop in their retail store. Friendly doggos are welcome. They also typically have a food truck in the back patio. This is a great jumping off point if you want to explore the DuPont State Forest area. There are tons of hiking opportunities here. This charming lake town is most commonly known as a retreat for Methodist churches. Anyone can enjoy the beautiful scenery though. There are also boat tours that are offered at the lake. There is also a golf course by the lake if you like to play golf. If you are looking for an active lake day then head here.

Sylva is another small town near Asheville that has a picturesque downtown area. They have weekly concerts in the summer called Concerts on the Creek! Dangerous, I know. The Tuckasegee River also offers whitewater for the adventurous type. I will be the first to admit that I have not explored Hendersonville nearly enough. Downtown Hendersonville is actually pretty lively and they have lots of events going on especially on weekends.

There are lots of shops, restaurants, and breweries here as well. But did you know that there are also some great local wineries in the area? Another great one is Saint Paul Mountain Vineyards. Hendersonville is also known for all the apple orchards surrounding it! It has its own bakery and is very kid friendly. This little town is close to the corner where the borders of North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia meet. Lots of great shopping, incredible restaurants, and an upscale downtown area.

If you can swing it make sure to stay at the Old Edwards Inn and Spa. The town of Cashiers is only 10 miles from Highlands.

There are lots of boutiques along the highway but you may need to do some investigating to find them. Iron Wok serves giant bowls of steaming pho, and Nantahala Brewing and Mountain Layers feature hoppy local brews. Or, ride the steam train throughout the year for lunch or as part of their special wine adventure. Outdoor enthusiasts head to Bryson City for white-water rafting, ziplining, and of course, hiking the Great Smoky Mountains and Nantahala National Forest.

The race offers every amenity available. The race lacks nothing. A marathon for the hardiest of the hardy, this race is held above the Arctic Circle and is the most northerly marathon in the Western Hemisphere. Some runners fly from Ottawa to Baffin Island, Canada, for five days.

You are alone with other runners and a few miners. The plane trip itself is a dream, chartered exclusively for runners. There are organized tours of Nanisivik Mine, Arctic Bay, and so on.

There is stark landscape with no shrubbery. The runners are taken care of in all aspects of the race. You get your medal at a ceremony and dance in the Dome, a community cafeteria. The course is very difficult with significant climbs and downhills throughout.

Unfortunately, the field is limited to the first or so people who sign up and pay their deposit. The cost of the five-day trip includes everything and is the most economical way to see the high Arctic. For me the trip is a spiritual journey to celebrate the joy of running. The memorial service at Terry Fox Pass is very moving. Most of the runners return year after year to visit with their extended family of running friends.

The course is hilly and the weather can be brutal, but the party and awards ceremony afterwards make up for everything. Contact: Midnight Sun Marathon, P.

Where else can you run in your underwear with impunity through every strata of a major American city without fear — with, in fact, exhilaration all around you? I went by myself but met others from Detroit on the plane. The host hotels were about one mile from the finish. Fantastic organization! There were about 30, entrants the year I competed.

There were spectators along every inch of the course. Lots of music, people of every ethnic variety. The finish was fantastic, especially the last two to three miles in Central Park. New Yorkers saw our medals and were extremely friendly. This race is a model for every large race. The crowds are great. Running through Central Park and the crowds at the end are thrills. Although it is one of the largest, the race is very well managed.

The expo is great but crowded. The crowds are great, and the support is excellent. The negatives are the logistics of the bus ride to the start and the long wait — usually in cold weather. George Marathon has been deluged with entries ever since. In actuality, the course features some challenging uphills and is not by any means an easy course. Scenery is awesome early in the morning as the sun rises. Logistics are a negative — a long drive to the start and a very cold wait.

George Marathon offers a scenic run. Participants are furnished a ride to the high point start of the marathon. Fires are started so runners are protected from the chilly air. The predominately downhill run does not have steep enough declines to cause leg discomfort. After the race, there is a barrage of goodies and drinks available. The awards are both unique and attractive. As you rapidly wind your way down the runners- only country highway, the sky lightens with glorious hues of color before the sun pops over the mountains.

Long shadows form across the valley floor as you wind ever down, and the sun plays on the colorful opposing canyon walls. Although there is a serious hill at about mile eight, and a few gentle rises to go over, this is a fast, elevation-loss course and one of the most popular Boston qualifiers. A beautiful — but tough — marathon whose course was seriously damaged by the storms of early , Big Sur is the top-rated marathon in The Ultimate Guide to Marathons.

Big Sur is a perennial favorite of numerous runners because of its breathtaking scenery and attention to detail along the course — a tuxedoed pianist playing classical music on a grand piano, for example.

Answer: Location, Location, Location. This answer rings true for many marathons, and Big Sur is a prime example. Winds can reach 40 to 50 mph at Hurricane Point, around mile Traffic control is perfect. Highway 1 is shut down for the race, and only race vehicles are allowed on the course. The pasta dinner has a huge variety of pasta with several sauces. A flock of doves is unleashed at the start. The only letdown was that the finish was anticlimactic after such a fabulous course.

The race is a little pricey, but worth it. The support is excellent, even though it is a point-to-point course on an isolated highway. One possible negative: the weather is either great or very bad. Over the past 20 years, Chicago has been through a raft of changes in management and style. The past several years the race has stabilized and is again rising toward the top of the pack among major marathons in North America. What about Chicago clicks with our panel of itinerant marathoners?

Today, the race has finally blossomed and performs from good to excellent in all categories. It allows for a great view of the city, its attractions, and its varied neighborhoods. Weather, however, is a big question mark, with a good potential for strong winds. On the flip side, however, on a good day, Chicago is a PR course. Although truly a megarace, Chicago is still small enough to allow marathoners to run well from the start. This is the best value per dollar of any of the great races.

It has a great registration and expo. There was everything a runner would need and aid stations with plenty of fluids. With such a crowd, there is great control of the start and finish area. Traffic control is excellent. Race date: Mid October Back to Top. Surely one of the best-organized races in the country, Marine Corps has a lot going for it, in spite of the potential for terrible East Coast fall weather.

It is no accident that both Oprah and vice president Al Gore picked it as the site for their inaugural marathons. The weather can be a factor, as this marathon is run during the last half of October. The organization of the race is excellent, but what else would you expect from the Marine Corps? There is adequate housing, but make your hotel reservations early. There is no official pasta party, but there are plenty of places to eat.

The course is fairly easy and includes mile markers and plenty of aid stations. Spectators line most of the course. Contact: Marine Corps Marathon, P. Race date: Late October Back to Top. This is another race that has had nearly as many course incarnations as years of existence.

For such a liberal-leaning city, San Francisco does not exactly bend over backward to accommodate a race that fills the tourist coffers on race weekend. What the race has going for it is an encyclopedia of spectacular views — and a start on the far side of the Golden Gate Bridge. All three of these marathon events offer runners a fast and flat course, which is ideal for achieving a marathon PR or Boston Qualifying time.

It was nice to get the single track portions of the race over with at the beginning because this year was wet poured on us right at the start and the trail was very muddy. The rest of the course was nice to run on save a couple miles near the end, which were a little rocky. The mile markers were helpful, as were the volunteers throughout the course, at the aid stations, and on bicycle patrol, even for those of us at the back of the pack.

The runners were friendly and encouraging as well. Good registration process, especially since there were two registration periods to accommodate more runners to fill dropped spots. With the Ellerbe Spring Marathon, you will not find all the bells and whistles you may be used to in larger races. The course is beautiful and fairly secluded. As an added bonus, at the end of the race you can indulge on homemade chicken and dumplings.

During the next four years, on somewhat secretive missions, Adriaen Block explored and mapped the coast along Delaware, New Jersey, Long Island, and New England, naming it for the first time New Netherlands.

Between and , three Dutchmen, Adriaen Block, H. Christiaensen and C. Mey surveyed land between the 40th and 45th parallels along the Atlantic coast and named the area they surveyed New Netherlands. Initially, small out-posts were built for the fur trade. In May , from a ship under the command of Cornelius Jacobsen Mey after whom Cape May is named thirty families were required to spread themselves throughout the region including Fort Wilhelmus. The last was on the east bank of the Delaware River , [6] the site of the first European settlement in what would become New Jersey.

Later another was built at Fort Nassau. Located at Paulus Hook it was part of the patroonship Pavonia , named in Latinized form for Micheal Pauw [8] who had bought the tract from the Lenape. At the time it was the territory of the Unami, or Turtle Clan.

In , Director-General of New Netherland Peter Stuyvesant "re-purchased" the entire peninsula known as Bergen Neck , and in granted a charter to the village at Bergen , establishing the oldest municipality in the state.

The British take-over in was formalized in , ending the province of the New Netherland, though the North Jersey would retain a "Dutch" character for many years to come. Part of southwestern New Jersey was settled by the Swedes by the midth century. Led by Printz, the settlement extended north from Fort Christina on both sides of the Delaware River. Printz helped to improve the military and commercial status of the colony by constructing Fort Nya Elfsborg , near present-day Salem on the east side of the Delaware River.

This action prevented the river from being easily taken by the English and Dutch, who were also trying to expand into the New World. The Swedish and Finnish colonists generally lived in peace with their Dutch and Lenape neighbors. New Sweden's colonial population may have peaked at people in , after being boosted by more than people along with new governor Johan Rising. This was not enough to stave off Dutch soldiers the next year, however. From the colony of New Netherland, the Dutch interfered with Britain's transatlantic trade with its North American colonies.

In September , a British fleet under Nicolls' command sailed into what is now New York Harbor and seized the colony. The British encountered little resistance, perhaps due to the unpopularity of the Dutch governor, Peter Stuyvesant.
