Researchers studying deer ticks in North Dakota have confirmed Lyme disease in one of the ticks captured during a research project that began last spring. According to Nate Russart, a University of North Dakota graduate student working on the tick study, Lyme disease was confirmed in a single adult deer tick captured in Steele County.

Researchers sampled 92 deer ticks, mostly in eastern North Dakota, and none of the other ticks tested positive for the disease, Russart said. Relatively common in Minnesota, which has more of the forested habitat deer ticks prefer, Lyme disease remains uncommon in North Dakota. But more cases have shown up in recent years. According to the North Dakota Department of Health, the state had 15 confirmed or suspected cases of Lyme disease in , along with 11 cases in , 12 cases in and seven cases in From to , North Dakota had no more than three cases, and there were no reports of Lyme disease in , and , the health department said.

Minnesota, by comparison, has averaged to more than 1, Lyme disease cases since , according to statistics from the state health department. Russart said he wasn't surprised to find Lyme disease in one of the deer ticks. If anything, he said he would have expected more of the ticks to test positive. Jennifer Cope, an epidemiologist for the state Health Department in Bismarck, said the confirmed presence of deer ticks is the most important finding in the study so far.

Even though tests found only one tick with Lyme disease, she said the presence of the ticks in North Dakota means there's potential for more cases of the disease. The goal, she said, is to educate clinicians who might not routinely diagnose Lyme disease to be on the lookout. As part of the project, researchers sampled for ticks by dragging white sheets through vegetation — a process called "flagging" or "dragging" — and by trapping small mammals such as mice and checking for ticks.

Russart said he made two sweeps across the state collecting ticks, along with additional sampling closer to Grand Forks, and the deer ticks were most abundant in northeastern North Dakota. Russart said most of the deer ticks were on the small mammals, and they found the ticks in the larval, nymph and adult stages.

Researchers also captured hundreds of the larger, more common norhh ticks or wood ticks, which Deee said will be tested for other diseases. Wood ticks are known to carry diseases such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever but not Lyme disease. Russart said he made two sweeps across the state collecting ticks, along with additional sampling closer to Grand Forks, and the deer ticks were most abundant in northeastern North Dakota. He said Grand Forks County had more adult deer ticks than anywhere else in the state, and the researchers found a high number of larval deer ticks in Grahams Island State Park.

It's difficult to say, he said, whether Grahams Island has a higher proportion of deer ticks or if he just happened to stumble onto a hotspot. He also said he can't conclude deer ticks are horth more abundant in the state, but the findings confirm they're here.

It's been shown in other areas that they've been spreading, and I think the same thing is happening" in North Dakota. Russart said two deer hunters — one in Minnesota and one in North Dakota — brought him ticks this week that he confirmed as deer ticks.

Meanwhile, Russart aee, people who spend a lot of time outdoors, especially in more forested areas, should be aware of the potential for encountering deer ticks west of the Red River. Adult deer ticks are about half the size of a wood tick, and the nymph and larval stages are even tickz.

Our top pick is the Inn on Biltmore Estate. I am looking to go to Asheville at some point this year, so definitely keeping this blog post handy. Of all the things to do at Biltmore, eating is one of our favorites. It is also the only time of year you can tour the house at night. Save this Biltmore itinerary for later, and visit Biltmore like a local with Uncorked Asheville.

When I visited, it was a very rainy start to the day in Asheville, a real gully-washer of a morning.

I was super bummed when I saw the weather forecast because I had prepaid tickets to the Biltmore Estate, valid for that day only. Since Biltmore has a great pet-friendly policy , I wanted to bring my two dogs, Murray and Munson, with me to enjoy the wide-open grounds on the Biltmore property too. Sadly, it was just too wet, with the potential to get wetter. So, what did I do when life gave me rain? I went to Biltmore without the dogs and did my best to emulate the joy of my sweet granddaughter, just like the day she did this….

I had a great day despite the weather! Western North Carolina will soon shake off its winter coat and Spring is a lovely time to visit Biltmore Estate when the gardens come alive with color. Unless you are going self-guided, I suggest booking a tour time early in the day before it gets too crowded. If you book at least 7 days in advance, you can get a discount! You can purchase your tickets online at Biltmore Ticket Information.

I suggest spending the first day checking out the Biltmore house and eating at one of the onsite restaurants. On day two, enjoy the winery and the vast grounds. Explore the 8,acre Blue Ridge Mountain backyard and create memories to last a lifetime.

Summer visits at Biltmore offer fun family-friendly outdoor activities as hiking, biking, river float trips, and fly fishing. For a more restive pace, enjoy the magnificent gardens, pack a picnic lunch, and relax in a quiet spot. There are two hotels to choose from: the more moderately priced Village Hotel, and the more luxurious Inn on Biltmore Estate. When you stay on the property, you can take advantage of the many shuttle buses on site, which is very helpful!

If you decide you want to spend an extra day, visit guest services to upgrade your ticket. Make sure you do this before you leave the premises on day one. This fee can be waived completely if you make a reservation for a next-day outdoor activity or a Behind-the-Scenes tour the day of your visit. Reserve at any guest services station or at the Outdoor Adventure Center. You will do a lot of walking as the estate is very large. In fact, some of the locations are several miles apart if you were to walk.

There are fans set up in many areas of the house, but it can still get very hot during the summer. Dressing in layers is a good idea to stay comfortable. Make sure you have time to park your car and catch a shuttle to the Biltmore house. I recommend at least 45 minutes. You may even need more time on a busy day. At Biltmore, dining is an experience within an experience, a way to further immerse yourself in the kind of hospitality for which the Vanderbilts were renowned.

There are six estate restaurants that provide a variety of fine and casual dining options, each of which feature estate-raised specialties. I used an audio guide on my recent visit and found it to be well worth the additional cost. You can listen to the guide as many times as you like so if you miss something the first time, just key in the number again and have a second go at the commentary.

Biltmore prides itself as being a self-sufficient property. Be sure to sample some of their foods and wines while visiting. You will find plenty of offerings of Biltmore products in the winery and gift shops. On my visit, I participated in the free wine tasting and sampled a few different wine selections. Later, Biltmore guests can linger at the beautifully designed wine bar where reserve and sparkling wines can be enjoyed by the glass along with delectable cheeses and locally-made truffles.

There are many options for specialty tours, with many requiring advance reservations. The Rooftop Tour is my favorite! You will enjoy amazing views from rooftops and balconies and get a closer look at the design and construction of Biltmore House with this minute guided tour of areas not on the regular house visit. Check out the other specialty tour offerings by clicking here.

The grounds are perfect for walking your pets, but please keep them securely leashed at all times. Pets except service dogs are not allowed in any building however. You will find Biltmore to be very pet-friendly and you can explore the gardens and grounds of the Estate on over 20 miles of pup-friendly hiking trails. All pets must be leashed on estate grounds for their own safety as well as the comfort of our other guests, and of course, always pick up after your pet.

When you tour the inside of the house itself, a limited number of outdoor, unattended pet kennels are available. They are self-service and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

If you are interested in using a kennel, please see a parking host for kennel information upon arrival on the estate. Despite the weather, I had a fantastic time at Biltmore and highly recommend setting aside at least six to eight hours if you are visiting for just one day.

Of course, a two day visit would make for a more leisurely time, but if one day is all you have, you can still see much of what Biltmore has to offer. Do you have other Biltmore tips or do you want to visit? Share your thoughts in a comment below!

If you liked this article please share it! Great tips! Reading this made me want to go back really soon! Come visit Leah! I would love to visit there!

I had a guest at a resort I work at in Pennsylvania tell me about it. Going on my list to visit in the future! Biltmore is a destination for sure!

So much to see and do on the estate itself and in Asheville as a whole. Come visit! Now I really want to visit this magical place! You shared so much helpful information! It is definitely going on my bucket list. The Biltmore house is beautiful. I think I visited when I was a little girl. I have two little furballs I love to carry with me whenever I can.

So what do you suggest I do with them if I want to check out the inside of any of the buildings? Jean, the free kennels could be an option for you. The kennels are shaded and away from a lot of foot traffic.

As long as your two fur babies can be outside in a potential heat situation kennels are outdoor enclosures , then you can leave them there. Bring a water bowl, as bowls are not provided. You will be given a personal lock to use on the kennel door, so your babies will be safe from that aspect. Thank you so much for so much great info!! Thank you Jillian!

I was very fortunate to go during the chihulyatbiltmore exhibit. The glass sculptures were amazing! Of course, Biltmore is amazing all on its own. Thank you! My daughter is over 8 months pregnant so you can be sure to see some posts about San Francisco very soon! Thanks for the tips! Hailey, oh yes, Biltmore is very dog-friendly! With over 20 miles of hiking trails, there is plenty to keep your pooch busy! If you are ever near Asheville, Biltmore should be a must-see activity.

There is so much to do, much more than just touring the house itself! Biltmore exhibition looks so cool and surreal to some extend with such bright color glass sculptures.

We thought about going, but it was super expensive. If you purchase tickets online and in advance, there is a small discount. I had to google where Biltmore was because I had never heard of it.
