One of the best Biltmore Estate tours for those wanting to do their own thing, tour Biltmore House and the gardens on your own schedule.

While you will still have to follow Biltmore's guided path, you can casually stroll through the home looking at furniture, tapestry, paintings, books, and everyday life for the Vanderbilts. A few of our favorite longer stops include the library, loggia, swimming pool, banquet hall, Halloween room, and bowling alley.

We tend to do the self-guided Biltmore tour when friends and family are in town. Forty-minutes long, you'll pause at specific numbers in each Biltmore House room while the narrator shares information about the Vanderbilts and their home.

Our audio guide happened to be a story of an opera singer visiting while the entire home prepared for her arrival. It was hilarious and great fun. Spring Garden. The Spring Garden comes to life when it is in full bloom. Shrubs and bushes placed throughout the garden come in all shapes and sizes and look as though they have been dusted with bright yellow, white and purple snow.

Its branches droop down with beautiful white flowers during the month of May. Shrub Garden. The four-acre Shrub Garden is home to over woody plants, shrubs and trees. Secluded paths wind through the Shrub Garden making it the perfect place for a quiet walk on a brisk, autumn afternoon. Wallad Garden. While the Wallad Garden was originally intended to be a mixed plot featuring flowers, fruit and vegetables, it became a garden filled with symmetrical flower beds arranged in ingenious patterns and trellises crawling with vines.

Tulips, daffodils and hyacinth bloom in the spring. The summer brings perennials that create colorful borders. In the fall you can find chrysanthemums that echo winter is on its way.

Discover Antler Hill Village and Winery. Connecting the past to the present, Antler Hill Village and Winery is a relaxing village with entertainment for all.

You can dine at fine eateries, taste exciting wines and discover the unique goods that the estate shops have to offer. Indulge in a full meal or have something light, Antler Hill Village and Winery offers something for everyone. The Bistro. The Bistro uses fresh, local ingredients. Whether you try one of their wood-fired pizzas, or succulent steaks is up to you. Exhibits change seasonally, and some are free while others are not. An example of a temporary Biltmore exhibit was the Downton Abbey period clothing show.

Although we never watched Downton Abbey, we loved seeing the dresses, hats, and riding gear. Say hello to the gorgeous draft horses, and watch chicks flourish under heating lamps.

See how a broom is made or watch a Blacksmith at work around Antler Hill Barn. They also host woodworker demonstrations throughout the day.

Did you know that the Biltmore has over miles of hiking trails and 8, acres to explore? Many of these hikes are short and great for the entire family. Of course, some of these Biltmore activities are better based on the weather, but North Carolina has pretty mild seasons. Take a guided tour with up to ten other guests. If you are looking for the ultimate luxury, splurge for a private minute carriage ride across the estate with loved ones. Explore even more romantic things to do in Asheville including dinners out, workshops, spas, and the best sunset spots. Or, take a 2-hour introduction class to fly-fishing, half-day fly-fishing lessons, or full-day fly-flying wade trip.

For the wade trip, you are required to have an NC fishing license, though. You could also grab subs off-site on your way to Biltmore at nearby Apollo Flame Bistro. Biltmore also offers a guided raft trip where your hosts paddle for you. Sounds Vanderbilt-esque to us. Because we visited North Carolina once and immediately moved to Asheville, we have yet to stay on-property.

Village Hotel — This property is centrally located with moderate prices and spa access. This is the hotel you see next to the winery and Antler Hill Village. The Village Hotel also has a pool. The Inn has the most conveniences including those requested mountain views. Lastly, there is also the premier cottage if you are George Vanderbilt himself. Cough, cough….

Biltmore Estate at Christmastime is magical. If you can pick when to plan your Asheville and Biltmore Estate visit, we suggest December. From early November to early January, the Biltmore mansion truly looks like Martha Stewart descended upon the rooms with a giant Christmas basket. In fact, encounter intricately decorated trees, 10, holiday ornaments, and , sparkling lights. Visitors may tour the home in the daytime or purchase special Candlelight Christmas Evenings tickets.

Find many of the 65 fireplaces blazing. Harp and guitar players play live music in the common rooms. Antler Hill Village also lights up, and usually, you can find a special exhibit around this time. The complimentary wine tasting, the trails and gardens, shopping, and access to the grounds are included with your Biltmore house admission. When we first visited Asheville and then returned to look at houses as well as close on our home, we stayed at a few Asheville hotels. They have some wheelchairs inside the house for guests at no charge for touring the first and second floors. At the gardens, park by the Conservatory for wheelchair access to the Walled Garden.

Antler Hill Village and Winery are wheelchair accessible. Guests with hearing difficulties can request a Neckloop Telecoil Coupler, a printed transcript or sign language interpreter.
